Why do we modify?

I've owned 4 brand new vehicles so far in my life. The three previous to the Wrangler I had no desire to modify in anyway. My thought was it's new, there is no sense in tearing it apart and doing things to it. With the Wrangler it's a complete 180. I'm constantly doing things to it...grill mod, tinted windows, tow hooks, garage door opener in the dash trick, etc., etc. It seems like I have one Jeep project on my "to do" list each weekend.

I just can't figure out why this vehicle is so much different than the others I've owned. It's almost like a primal instinct to modify it. :D My wife laughs at me, it's to the point where on Saturday morning she'll say, "what are you doing to the Jeep this weekend?" That is quickly followed up with a "Just Empty Every Pocket" comment as she shakes her head... :)

I have always and will always modify my vehicles.
I dont like being just like everyone else, and i tend to flock toward vehicles with a specific purpose....
Jeeps, mustangs, classics, etc.

With the jeep i modify to make it more capable and more badass.
With the stang i modified to make it faster and more badass
I have a 69 gmc that i have modded to make it a badass classic truck.
I had a 64 1/2 mustang that i resto-modded

I mean if i had a camry, there would be no purpose to mod it (ricers do anyway but they dont count because they are idiots :thefinger: ) But the jeeps an offroad machone, the stang is for speed, the truck's for crusing and before that the old stang was for cruising.....

My last 4 new vehicles have had mods waiting for them when I brought them home.
Everything I've had before that was modded within probably a week of me getting ahold of it.
All of the clunkers I had in high school and all of the others after that- everything gets modified somehow.
I got my first new vehicle right out of high school - an S-10 Baja pickup. I had a sawzall in hand cutting the roof off to make it a Targa within 3 weeks of picking it up. 1200 miles on the clock and the roof on the floor next to it when I was 18 and nothing has changed since then :grinpimp:
I guess in my mind, if something isn't exactly the way I want it, why not make it that way?

Cars, trucks, bikes, house, toys whatever - if I wanna change something, I do it :)

I'll start with the vehicle closest to what I want that I can at least semi-afford and go from there. I guess I just look at them as starting points.

Unless you're a pure utilitarian "it gets from point A to point B" type, we all get a vehicle and think "wow I really like this EXCEPT....." so why not fix whatever the exception is? Whether it's changing the wheels, ripping the whole suspension out, cutting the roof off or whatever.

That's kind of the allure of the car culture to me, the variety.
I mean think about it - a new 7 digit Buggati Veyron for $1.2M or the used Cavalier up the road for $500 they do the exact same thing.
Just some do it faster, or smoother, or more comfortably, or over rocks, or whatever - still the same concept as back in the 20's - it carries our lazy asses around.

I've owned everything from 50's VWs to sports cars, 4x4s, luxury cars, trucks, hearses - well you get the idea, and none of them were 'perfect' so I play with them.
Kinda like big kid legos :thefinger:

I have never modded a new vehicle until our JK also. I think mainly it is because my wife is all for it with the JK, whereas before it was always like "You wanna waste your money on what?'. We both want to get the JK more trailworthy and start doing some serious fun stuff with it!!

Because a new-from-the-factory Wrangler with all the options is a good starting point for doing what I want to do...but there are still many places that I want to go where the factory rig won't - or won't comfortably.

With "just a few more mods" I'll be able to go where I want to go, and still use my rig for road trips. :D

I think, for me anyway, it has everything to do with getting what you want and making it what you want. And certain things are made to be modded and personalized more than others. You certainly aren't going to lift an accord or put 40s on it. :shaking:

My Jeep is the first vehicle I have ever modified. It is also my first brand new vehicle. My other vehicles were used, thus I was limited in my choices, and they were simply modes of transportation. The Jeep was something I wanted. I love it. It's my baby. I want to make her pretty and badass.

One day when I get my Harley, I will mod it too.

Back in the day (high school) we used to lift the rear ends of our cars to give them a raked look and to fit big ole' slicks on them. Engines were tweaked, paint was changed, mood lights were added and the best stereo a part time job could pay for was added.

30 years later I'm still at it :smokin:

I don;t think I have ever owned a vehicle I have not customized or seriously modified in one way or another. I don;t know why, maybe just a guy thing.

Damn, a lot of car and motorcycle jockeys answered. The Jeep/4x4 answer is because you couldn't get there without a winch before the mod. I've been doing this since before I could legally drive. All the mods I do have a purpose and I only incorporate esthetics when practical.
