Tips for getting stuck lug nuts off?

The lugs on my JK are consistently tough to get off. I've never had this much trouble with any of my other cars. Can't figure it out. Hell, my impact wrench doesn't even budge them. They get torqued to spec, but when it comes time to rotate tires....:pissed: I'm going to go out and try the stock lug wrench with a breaker bar, but I just feel like I shouldn't have to resort to that every time I need to take a wheel off. God forbid my wife ever has to change a tire on the side of the road. :shaking:

Had the same problem... Had to even get a tool that unscrews the lugs. But that was my fualt, I never torqued to spec... I just tightened with a breaker bar as hard as I could - never had a problem with my cars with this method. Now I actually torque to spec and haven't had a problem since. Point is maybe you are over-torquing... Or your torque wrench is off.

If you can get it off with a breaker bar, then you need a better impact. It's not uncommon for them to be harder to break loose after some run time, hot/cold cycles, etc.

^ YES. Whatever you do, in getting them off, DO NOT use penetrating oil (WD-40, PB Blaster, etc.) to loosen them- it'll keep loosening them after you re-torque them on :) Seen it happen before- not a good time when a wheel goes flying off as you're rolling down the highway- Mark W.

If you got a hi-lift (or a piece of spare pipe layin around) use the pipe, slip it over the breaker bar and give it a good push. Worked for me time and time again. A lever long enough can move the world :D then anti-seize it up and put the lugs back on. That's the first thing I did when I put my 35's on.

:smokin: This'll really piss you off

Don't use anti-seize/oil/loc-tite, or anything on lug nuts

They should be " the correct lug nut for the wheel" and torqued to 85/95 lbs (DRY) and NEVER use impact guns for lug installation, unless you work for somebody and it's not your jeep

Heh Heh Heh

I ended up driving to the "former" Jeep dealership. I handed the service manage the lug wrench and told him to pretend he's got a flat on the side of the road. He tells me they always torque to spec. He couldn't get them off and I told him it would really suck if it was my wife and kids on the side of the road. He took the Jeep and broke the lugs free and then promptly torqued them to spec.

Here's the other kicker. A few months ago we had a free oil change and they were the last one to change the oil in the Jeep. I crawled under the Jeep yesterday to change the oil and found a rounded off drain plug. I drove back to the dealership, told them to change the oil using the oil and filter in the back and replace the drain plug since they rounded it off. They guy actually tells me "we didn't do that and that kind of stuff never happens in a professional shop". I replied with "can you recommend one?" :smokin:

Safe to say after all that, I won't be back. I rather do my own work anyway.
