Steering intermediate shaft

Not sure there is thread about this or not? But I thought I would start one anyway.

I had the steering intermediate shaft changed out about 6000km ago due to the famous knocking and clicking feeling in the footwell as well as the steering wheel. It was quite annoying to be quite honest with you. Anyway I had them change it under warranty and it was all good until about 3 days ago or 6000km later. Right back to the way it was.

So what to do now???? I could obviously get them to change it again under warranty but I will just have the same problem happen again in 5000k again. I know there was some people on the other forum who had the same problem with this and solved it by using a needle injector on a grease gun and filling the shaft boot with grease. I have been a bit hesitant on doing this as I still have warranty, but I have to say it has been annoying to say the least so I decided to try it today.

Verdict? It works awesome. :bounce: I can't feel it at all anymore.

Anyway I just wanted to share this with everyone in case there is anyone else experiencing the same thing with their's.

Stabilizer Bar failed in Intermediate Shaft

Does this sound like the same deal?

My daughter, away at college, had some heavy vibration (rattling), shaking the car from front to rear on the highway going back to school. The Mechanic called it wobbling.

She took it to the local Jeep dealer. The Service Manager said they checked steering play with one guy underneath the veicle and another rotating the steering wheel. SM quotes $549 parts, $900(+) total with labor, and wants to put on a pair of tires & do an alignment.

I am a novice that likes driving Jeeps and no mechanic.

What doyou guys think?

To me, it doesn't sound like the intermediate shaft that this thread is talking about.

Your daughters issue sounds more like loose and/or failing steering components, and/or tires that are bad or may just need to be re-balanced?

Get a full list of the parts from the dealership, not just the total costs, and post it up. My guess, they want to put new tires on and add a new steering stabilizer instead of actually figuring out what is causing the vibes. :D

An alignment will depend on which steering components are replaced. Dealerships like to charge for alignments because there really isn't much to be done to these jeeps other than re-centering the steering wheel and checking the Toe. (if she knows someone there who is semi-mechanically inclined, you can find all of the steps here on this site. None of it is difficult.)
