Auto transmission slipping when Jeep is on an incline.

If I'm on an incline for more than perhaps 30 to 60 seconds, my transmission starts to slip.

Transmission fluid is good (changed at the beginning of the year) and full.

My guess is that it has something to do with the fluid draining from where it needs to be to do it's job.

Anyone else run into this?

What are possible solutions?

In normal driving, the tranny works fine.

Stuff like this is where I have a problem.

You are checking the level properly? I don't have an auto but fluid level sounds like the culprit, and it solved a friend of mines identical problem. Some autos have specific gear requirements and temp to check level.

I don't know the particulars of his situation, but I have the Rockard Oil Pan, Transmission & Dual Catalytic skid. I mainly purchased it for the oil pan protection. I would like to do the RK transmission pan, but don't think it would fit with my skid. So I either keep what I have or get rid of the skid and get new armored tranny and oil pans.

Try checking the fluid level fully warmed up and at idle. It's probably 1qt+ low. Fill to between the two lines and you should be jammin'. If you have an aftermarket oil cooler, when the engine is shut off the fluid in the cooler will run back into the sump and give you a false reading.

I've always had this problem, even with the proper tranny fluid level.
Also, quick question...
How do you guys ever hit your oil pan to the point of needing a oil pan skid? I've been wheeling for many years (apparently not hard enough) and have never smashed up an engine oil pan. ? Maybe my axles are too big?

the pans are probably not needed in a lot of cases, but i honestly feel A LOT better knowing i have a skid plate down there 'just in case.' i dont get out and wheel nearly as much as i want to, and not nearly as much as a lot of you guys, but i feel added protection is always a good thing.

Lol, I have the full Poly skid system and have smacked the crap out of everything BUT the oil pan skid, which doesn't have a single mark on it.

Never touched the oil pan skid.

co4lo,

Chicken or the egg? Why do I need the tranny skid? because I have it. I guess I could remove it, but then I wouldn't have a smooth surface on the bottom.

When JKs first came out, everybody was complaining about this, but we eventually just chalked it up to normal behavior. Mine has done it several times while playing in really steep dunes. My fluid level was full and my tranny functioned perfectly otherwise.

i run the RROR skids and not a scratch on my oil pan skid, but i figure as soon as you take it off is when your gonna smash it.

Make sure when you check the fluid level that it has been driven for at least 15 minutes, while still running put the jeep in neutral, engage the e brake and check the level. If it is good then you need a deep sump tranny pan.

Used to happen all the time in my YJ. put on a deep sump pan, and overfilled by a qt, never had a issue again. Have had it vertical several times.

I haven't experienced this yet with the Jeep, but I used to have a Chevy pickup that would do this on a friend of mine's driveway. His driveway was so steep, I couldn't drive up it forward. I had to turn the truck around and go up his driveway in reverse. PITA.

It did just happen to me last weekend on Widowmaker in Moab. I was super vertical, and even though I accepted the winch for safety I was still trying to crawl up it. The tranny would slip untill the RPMs got higher and then it would pop into gear, even though I knew what was going on it was still scary. RK deep sump pan------come to me!

I found a new one this weekend, which I didn't know about at least. When oil pressure gets around 5 psi the motor cuts out. 10 mins sat at a steep angle and the motor just turns off. Not so good when you can't even be winched in either direction! Wait a while and it will start back up, but needed to keep the rpm high to keep the oil pressure up.
