I am getting ready to put new tires on the jeep and was going to put them on the stock wheels with wheel spacers. But now am wondering if I would be better off with wheels that have the proper amount of backspacing.
So what would be the optimal backspacing to run 35" tires ?

We sure make a lot of wheels at 3.5" bs for jk owners

anything under 4.5 inches will work, but keep in mind the less bs your wheels have the farther out past your fenders they`ll stick out

I run 4.25" BS with a 12.5" wide 37 with no issues

Stock wheels with 1.5" spacers are a tried n true recipe for 12.5" wide tires

since stock wheels are around 6" BS, add a 1.5" spacer and you end up simulating ~4.5" BS

so as was previously said, anything less than 4.5" will give the clearance.

my new hummer wheels are being built with 3.5" (coincidently by TWF!)
