Upside down shocks?

1683 Views 14 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  dyolfknip
My rear shocks are getting beat up and I'm wondering if I can just flip them over to save them. I have the tera flex shocks that come with the 2.5 BB. I know I'd have to push to bar pin out and move it to the other end but don't know if they'll work properly the other way.

What type of shocks are they? Monotube? Twin tube?

If it is a monotube WITH a full floating piston then there should be no issue. I think that is the type you may have but, that is what you would want to check on.

I do not belive any type of twin tube can be ran upside down.
The Teraflex shocks are twin-tube, they're not going to be happy upside down.

Is this TeraFlex as in the company?

I assume so with that screen name :homersimpson:

If so, welcome to the forum! Nice to have the pressence here. I have been happy with my teraflex gear I have ran on XJ's and the JK for years

Excellent assumption. :) I'm going to try to be here more, as soon as my invisible black star turns yellow.

Your name sounds familiar, don't you have a nice flat fender Willys??
You mean like this????

These are Poly Performance... I'm guessing they designed these to be upside down...

I used to, and I'm actually building one again now, since I miss the old one. (nice hijack here, huh? :D)

Oops, that was a pretty massive hi-jack.

I suppose it is ok if the question was answered first! :thefinger:

Our shocks don't care if they're up or down, but not all mono-tubes are that way. As you stated earlier though, only mono-tubes with a floating piston to separate the high pressure nitrogen from the shock oil can be ran either way. So piggy back shocks, remote reservoirs and shocks like ours with an IFP (Internal Floating Piston) can go either way. Emulsion type mono-tubes don't have the dividing piston and allow the oil and N2 to mix (basically turning your shock oil into shaving cream under heavy use), especially if ran in the incorrect direction. Emulsion's are going to fade about as fast as any twin tube, so we try not to use them in our own products.

airric00,

It looks like you unseated the shaft wiper in your shock. That should still be in the seal carrier to do its job correctly. Send me that shock and I'll get you a new one.

Sweet thanks!!
My Rough Country 2.2s run upside down (well from stock anyway). No issues yet.
