Just curious if anyone else has had problems getting large items (i.e. bumpers) delivered from these yahoos without any damage. I had to order five bumpers (3 shipped UPS, 2 FeEx) before I finally got one in undamaged!
The customer service lady from UPS was very nice but could offer no explanation for the incompetence other than to say "they've had several similar complaints".
I have NEVER recieved any package from either that spent all or part of a weekend in the local distribution hub without any damage.
I'd love to hear some feedback on this and particularly from anyone in S.W. lower Michigan or Northern Indiana.

I can guarantee that anything that's shipped to me via UPS will be damaged. I have had absolutely horrible service from them. I once had to drive up to the store and pick the item up myself to get an undamaged one - about 4 damaged ones from UPS was all I could take.

I have had good luck with FedX, though. I don't think I've had any damaged goods from them.

A guy I know who worked for DHL once told me that they hire college kids (no offense to ALL college kids) to work in the warehouses during the summer months and part time during the year. He said they had problems with them roughly handling and damaging packages. He told me "They just don't give a sh*t. They'll throw'em around". Not sure if that's the case where you are, but it's not impossible.

The secret is to have the package insured for a high value our scale goes from 1000 to 4999 and the 5000 and up. I was told by our ups driver and the people at our local hub that anything over 2500 is essentially handled in a different area from the normal packages, thus no damage. It only cost .05 per $100 dollars to insure a package.

I have had pretty good dealings with both but one time UPS did lose a sway bar for my car. The driver came by to have me sign the papers for my refund and no lie said "I remember bringing a box here and I gave it to a guy who was walking by here..."

I've got a friend who works for UPS loading trucks (mostly because he wanted the Teamster benefits). The horror stories he tells about how they throw stuff around are just amazing. I don't ship anything through them anymore if I can avoid it. Unfortunately, I can't imagine it's any different elsewhere.

I had a bumper and rails shipped, no damage to either. Some holes in cardboard. Sometimes the vendor needs to pack better.

Sorry, I'm not trying to discount that your new bumper is being damaged in shipment. It sucks. But try shipping or receiving a 3k open reel sometime and see how they treat itissed:
I refuse to use FedEx. They are morons. I tell them to hold at the depot. They try for three days to deliver. It rides on the truck for an additional THREE DAYS because they can't seem to do a simple task after several calls from me. I get to the depot, yeah they have it here, wait a minute, I'll go get it. A few minutes later I hear thump, thump, thump. WTF?!? The lady is ROLLING my 3K open reel deck across the floor. I guess they don't have handtrucks at FedEX. I was so mad I could have commited unspeakable things at that moment. Fortunately, the shipper knew what he was doing and packed it well. The reel tables were pushed in, but that was it, no big deal.

I once got a mailed letter from UPS (mailed via USPS) that stated that I had an invalid address and I would have to call them for delivery when I gave them a deliverable address.

hahaha. My address was "invalid" so they sent a letter to that same address to tell me it was invalid. Nice.

Was it a PO Box or an apartment complex with a PO Box like mail area? UPS or Fex Ex won't deliver to PO Boxes but USPS will

I actually work for ups and in the last month they have been cracking down on damaging packages. If the manufacturer packages the bumpers correctly they don't get damaged. However when you move 8,000 packages a day sometimes stuff happens. I unload the semi trailers when they show up in the mornings (3:00AM) and alot of the damage is done by packeges being on top of other packages. They end up crushing each other.
Don't hate Ups, hate all shipping companies. BTW I think Fed Ex is the best even if they are morons.
Oh and those high dollar packages get thrown around just as much but we have to pull them of and manually scan them so they don't get lost. (5 finger discount).

No. It was my home, residential address.

The reality is that when ship something as big and heavy as a bumper, it will get thrown around and dropped. Despite the efforts of manufacturers to pack them well, (some better than others), they invariably suffer superficial damage (usually lost paint or powder coat). That type of damage doesn't bother me personally (although I understand why it may bother some people) and I've rattle canned many an item that's arrived that way. If something were more seriously damaged, like bent/twisted metal, etc, then I'd be a little more ticked off.

When I ordered my M.O.R.E. bumper for my XJ, I was sitting at home the day it was to be ddelivered watching TV when I heard steel dragging on the sidewalk outside. I though, no, it coudln't be...Looked outside and sure enough, there was a scrawny UPS guy, draging my bumper down the sidewalk. It instantly wore a hole through the box and he was just draging it on the cement leaving a white line all the way from the street to my door. When I opened the door I asked if he had a dolly and he said "yes, what the hell is in there anyway?". issed:

I was stunned by the whole thing. Atleast it was unpainted. If it had been powdercoated I would have been upset.

Hey when you deal with 115lb packages that are packed in a little thin box it gets F'd up. If the manufactures pack it in expansion foam and double box anything over 50lbs then it won't get damaged. That is how the ship transfercases, expensive bumpers and sliders. We get bumpers etc. here at the shop all the time with no defects. Had to refuse only one.

Yman. All FOUR bumpers were packaged very well. When you apparently drop a 150 lb bumper on one of its ends, it really doesn't matter how good it's packaged. Like I said before, it's not just the bumpers, EVERYTHING comes in damaged here.
