A few weeks ago I had to take my JK to dealer because my transfer case shifter cable broke where it hooks onto to the transfer case, they fixed it after waiting for part for a week, really no big deal! So yesterday I took my wife and kids on a little adventure (as they like to call it) and I go to shift down into 4LO and I thought it broke again. So I crawl under it, in the sand and mud, to find out that the cable was still attached at the linkage but the cable assembly fell out of the bracket that holds it in place! I assume there is some type of clip that holds it in place but it was not there, I managed to get it to stay enough to get it back into gear. The tech at dealership may have reinstalled it wrong, I don't know! Anyway, no 4WD for me till I can take it back!! Stupid Jeep!!! (just kiddin, I still love that thing)

We have had this happen on several '08's. The cheap plastic snaps if you give it any muscle at all. We teach our guests to use one finger to shift--if it takes more pressure than that, let your foot off the brake to let the Jeep roll a few feet, then try again. Or put it back in Drive for a moment, then do it again.

Chances are they just didn't get it installed correctly.

That is OK but the vehicle should be rolling 1-3 mph in neutral to shift in and out of 4 lo.

I always get a grind if it is moving more than a crawling speed, on both X's and Rubis. Stopped seems to work smooth, and, of course, with rental customers, we want to keep it as simple as possible for them, otherwise they try to shift at 10 mph! :D

I'm such a noob.:emb: We've had the Jeep for alomst two years now and only a few times offroad. I still have trouble with 4lo.

I've heard about the shifter cable thing before and always fear I'm gonna' do it next. Good tips JeepSchool, guess I just need more practice.;)

Unbelievable!

We were in 4Hi messin in the river. Shifted into 4Lo to go into some steep loose areas. Shifted back into 4Hi when I came back across the river. Drove around like that for a couple more hours and when it was time to head towards the pavement the lever was slack! What a lousy design.

Any suggested changes other than keeping a few spare clips in the box?

When the dealer fixes the broken clip concern , they will replace the whole cable. They'll need to order the cable and takes them a few hours to replace it. Screw that.

However, you can buy the plastic clip separately for 40 cents each. Even though when I broke mine I could have fixed it for free under warranty, I bought about five of them and popped it in myself in 30 seconds. I now have spares for myself or anybody else if it happens on the trail.

You guys are scaring me... where do I buy those 40 cent clips.. ya all got a part number and a picture of how to clip it on??

thanks
Unless someone beats me to it, I can get the part number in a few hours when I go out to my Jeep at lunch time. You can get them at your local dealership (they'll probably won't stock it).

Installing it is easy. The clip easily snaps onto the cable end and then with a large screwdriver, you can easily pry the cable end into the linkage.

Weird, that part number is not in my parts pdf....it is for a 2007 tho, did they change this design?
Either the number superceded an older number (happens a lot) or this part was not available in 2007.

Thank you for reminding me about this. Happend to another JK on one of our runs down here and I told myself I would order some when I got back to the shop and I never did. Just ordered 10 (cost 20 cents ea.) to keep in the parts bin.

It sucks when you have aftermarket skids because you can not get to the cable unless you remove them. Keep my fingers crossed that I only need them for "other" JK's. Trail cost....one beer.

Like he said, the key is to install the gromet in the cable first then press the assembly onto the linkage. It's alot harder to pop the gromet on the linkage and then try to press the cable on. Don't ask me how I know this.

Piss on all them clips... take lever off T case, grind off tit that cable hooks to, drill out to 5/16", then use a nut&bolt to hook cable to case
