Hi Everybody,

Might be a silly question - but I thought I would ask for the heck of it. In the 2+ years I have owned my 08 Rubi Unlimited I have never taken any of my three piece top off of my (just nothing that has crossed my mind up til this point - personally). However now that my son is older, and would enjoy that sort of thing more - I plan to change that this summer, and am looking to start taking the top off and enjoying the freedom and open air the way a Wrangler was made to be used.

So looking at the screws that need to be removed before the top can come off - I am wondering if there is a recommended tool that I should look into buying thats best for removing these screws? Or should I just head to my tool box and grab the correct sized allen wrench, and just use that.

I guess I am just making sure there is no after market part out there that you all recommend that is different, or easier / faster to use......than the normal tools I probably already have in my normal tool box?

Thanks for your help!

You need a 40 size Torx-bit. I use one that is made for a 1/4" socket wrench. I also like to use a 6" extension so that once they are loose....I can just spin the extension in my hand to quickly remove them. Only tool needed.

JMO- Don't over-tighten when putting them back in- really snug, but not torqued too hard. You can actually crack the hardtop itself.

#40 Torx head wrench. Should just need to remove the 2 big screws (by hand not Torx) under the speaker bar for the 2 front freedom panels, 2 screws off the B pillars and then the 6 or so along the cargo lining (Torx for these). Other than that you should be good to go...Then obviously have your son put in his sweat to help you remove the rear top.

Anyone else confirm or deny?

Also when I was lookin' Home Depot didnt carry the size Torx I needed...got it from my friend who had an extra. But Ive seen em online too or local auto/truck stores can carry em.

I got the ratchet bit set, T5 through T55 Torx bits. T5-T30 are 1/4" drive and T35-T55 are 3/8" drive. It's good to have all of them because you need Torx to take the doors off and adjust the headlights and a bunch of other things I haven't found yet.

Oh yeah, the seat belt bolt is Torx too.

I just leave the 2 torx bits for the top and the doors as well as a ratchet in the center. Just make sure not to crank the hard top screws down too much or you WILL crack the top.

if you go to ebay or any aftermarket parts store online for JKs, they sell "quick removal" screws that are turned with your fingers. I bought a set for my hard top and is the quickest easiest way to undo everything! :D Thinking about getting a set for my soft top as well! :D

X2. I love this option. On the unlimited there are 2 more on top, right where the freedom panels come off, wish I could use them there.
