So i put o hole in my oil pan last trip out got it home and pulled it off to fix it. I happend to reach up and fill the timing chain. Lots of slop. I now have everything tore down to the timing chain. And i cant seem to get the cam gear amd crank gear to line up. On my 302 it was simple and line up marks on each gear. Are the 3.8s timing gears the same? Any input would be appreciated.

The pictures aren't bright enough to see whats going on with the timing marks.

Does your new chain have two links that look different from the rest, with eight links between them?

Each sprocket should have two timing marks. One mark on each faces the other sprocket's mark, while the other marks line up with the links that look different from the rest. Those will be to the right side, as you face the engine.

Have not received the new chain yet. But i can see if i can get better pictures. The last timing chain i did was simple ony one mark on the cam gear and the notch on the crank gear lined up.

Does the old chain have two different links, with eight links between?

Crank sprocket arrow points up.
Cam sprocket arrow points down.
Link alignment dots line up with the two different colored links, on the right as you face the chain.


The info I posted is from the service manual.

here you can see the 2 different colored links. With 8 between. Now correct me if im worng but isint the first cylinder on the left number 1

Much better picture.

#1 cylinder is the front cylinder on the right side of the engine, (actual right side of the engine, as seen from behind.)

Rotate your engine until that cam sprocket arrow is pointing down at 6 o'clock.
There should be an arrow on the crank sprocket pointing up at 12 o'clock.
Look for the colored chain links to be to the right as you face the engine.
If they are not, you will have to turn the crank two more revolutions.
There should be a dot on each sprocket, aligned with the colored links.

Looks like you have proper timing in the latest series of pictures.

Can you see an arrow on the crank sprocket?
The crank key slot looks like it's about where it should be.

with a little more cleaning i found it. But everything look correct to you. I appreciate your help

Looks good. Thanks for posting pictures. They will certainly help anyone who has to change a 3.8L timing chain.

Out of curiosity how many miles on the engine? There isn't a recommended timing chain interval, correct?

I think Chrysler just figured they would all die a painful oil starved spun main bearing death long before the chain would need replaced lol

just some pics of the new stuff lined up for easier viewing. But now to get the old crank gear off. Ive tried about eveything.
