Thoughts on this YJ

SO, around the same time someone in my club tried selling me a YJ they picked up in a trade and are not going to do anything with, another guy in my club was lloking to drop alot of cash on a TJ - half jokingly I told him I would sell him the JK iof he wanted to spend that kinda coin - well lo and behold he was serious and wants the JK -

I am thinking of picking up this YJ for under 4k

95 YJ
Waggy 44's w front and rear detroits 5:13's
AMC 360 - less than 5k on this motor
38.5's
full cage with harnesses - tied into frame and rockers
mechanically sound and build right - not any hack on it -

Has a few issues, needs a choke cable - new tires - fuel cell or tank to be fixed, front bumper and a winch and a tank for the OBA

probably convert the front to high steer - but what do you guys think ? worth it or am i asking for problems going this route from the jk - I was looking for a less computer based rig that could be beat on and take body damage without worrying about replacement costs -

i am liking the fact that YJ parts are cheap compared to the JK and readily available.

thinking this thing can be completely done and i will be in it for less than 7g's

So ?

I know you are from Mass, what do they use on the road up there? Salt or Sand? If salt check the frame for rust damage.

You could always put some more armor on the thing so that it takes the hits. Probably a cage as well. While you are at it maybe throw on fuel injection.
this rig didnt originate from MA it is completely rust free ! frame and body - already has full armor except for rear corners - already has a full custom cage... and it comes with w a Holley TBI in the box, which is all wired up and ready to go - last owner said he had trouble getting it to run right with the fuel injection -

when I say a few things like tires a fuel cell and a high steer kit, front bumper and winch.... this thing would not need another thing !
based on your sig what is the end goal of the yj? Will you miss the room, wb and drivability of the 4 door?

Then again if those things are no longer your concern go for it, i am sure you will be well ahead even after the mods needed for the yj.

The end goal of the yj is to wheel something that can scrape the rocks and I am not worrying about replacing doors or a top... I will need it to be able to drive 30 miles on the highway on occasion for kids sports, even if its not practical to drive.

I do like the wheelbase of the jk, but the room wine be missed much.. I carry my spare and hi lift in the back along with my spare shafts, I put the rear seats down and strap in my tool box and trail box. My little guy wheels with me and nobody else so the missed room isn't an issue.. And I'm thinking the 38.5s and v8 can probably make up for the wheelbase. My one complaint of the jk is the low belly..

The yj would be trailered to wheeling trips

In that case, its sounds like a no brainer to me. What do you got to loose.
Only issue I see with it are the D44's. 38's are a lot of tire for those axles. You'll probably want to go for a set of tons eventually. Good news is its rolling now, you could take your time building a set of axles.

Yea.. its still for sale but I am leaning towards a trade/cash deal for an ls yj on tons and coils - been a few on Pirate recently

I like the sound of this ^^^
yea, sounds good on paper - til you have to figure out the logistics from coast to coast... need to find something a bit closer - im willing to travel a day if need be.

the more I researched it, I realized I could be in the Ls swapped YJ with everything I would want to do to the jk or this YJ above for what I would eventually spend anyway - and have a great wheeler and some coin in pocket!

I keep having the urge to wheel the JK like it shouldnt be wheeled !!! The one ton YJ would fit the bill -
what did you end up doing?
