I can't help on the re-install, but I'd like to have one of those, and the part it goes into, to retro-fit into my '08.

 

i love having this now. although if you're retro fitting it, i would go with the woods kit. had it on my 09 for 2 years and it never failed me (unlike the above). it might seem pricey for just a piston and some brackets, but it's worth every penny.

 

How did you fix it? Did you have to replace it? Have a part number??

 

Yes, I did fix it.

All you need to do is pull the arm back through the rollers (in reverse of how it came out).
For that I drilled a small hole through the rear tip (not the one with the joint) between the tip and the shoulder. The plastic coating sports some round mold marks there and I drilled through them (in the picture the white spot on the tip).
Then I attached some thin braided-steel wire through the hole and routed it through the rollers. Grip the wire end however you can. Use pliers or wrap it around a handle or whatever you can think of.
Then I fastened the roller housing in a vise and pulled the arm through.
My previous attempts to push the arm back-in increased the curvature of the arm so I straightened it a bit with a rubber mallet.

Thanks for posting the fix.

I bought one and retrofitted it to my '08. It's been working great. It won't pull out as long as the gate hinges are not damaged from over-travel.
