New Cell Phone mount (07-10)

I wanted a cell phone mount on the left side of the radio. All the brackets and mounts that are sold usually place the unit on the right side of the radio. Since I use my iPhone mostly for navigation when I’m in the Jeep, I just thought this set up was a lot easier. It just seemed to me with the mount on the other side of the radio it would have taken more effort and more of my attention away from the road. So after lots of studying and planning I finally came up with the following design solution.

Materials:
- Jeep Wrangler year models 2007 - 2010 only
- one 2x3 right angle brace
- two – ½ inch self-tapping truss screws
- pkg of 6-32 x 3/8 screw w/nut
- spray paint (your own color choice)
- a hard case cell phone sleeve (optional)

Start by removing the top dash panel over the radio, remove vent covers, pop out the front panel of the radio, vents, and AC controls. Just pull the panel out a little ways. There is no need to separate anything electrical from the panel. Remove the radio (I found it better to work without it in my way). You do have to unhook the connections for it, but it’s fairly easy to do.

Take the right angle brace, line it up and mark where you want to place the mount, you will want to play with this and get it in the proper position that will suit you and your phone/electronic gadget. Note: make sure that its placement won’t interfere with the top panel when it’s put back on. Also be aware of the wiper lever and if it will interfere with your gadget.
I put the 2” side as the side that I would anchor to the panel. I like the way it kind of made the mount sit flush with the front of the panel.

On the inside of the panel mark the holes that you will drill small pilot holes for the truss screws.

Drill the “small” pilot holes, these are only to get the self-tapping truss screws to anchor into the plastic panel easier.

At this point I would paint your angle brace mount whatever color you choose. I chose a black satin, but it was also what I had on hand. If I had bought a color I probably would have gone with a gray or slate.

Place the angle brace, and anchor it to the inside of the panel using the two self-tapping
Truss screws. Tighten until they are secure. Do not over tighten.

Replace the radio (be sure to re-connect it), snap the front panel back on, replace the AC vents, and snap the top panel back on. You’re basically finished with the major part of the mod.

After this it really depends on what electronic gadget your going to be attaching to the new mount. It's fairly adaptable to many things.

I wanted this for my iPhone, so the rest of these instructions are how I mounted the case to hold my iPhone.

I had an old case from when I had a previous model of iPhone. It’s a simple sleeve case, and the new iPhone just slides in and out of the top very easily. I drilled two holes in the case to match up with the holes in the mount. Then I use the 6-32 screws (and two wingnuts) to bolt the case to the mount. I glued a small piece of rubber to cover the screw heads so they don’t scratch the phone. So now all I have to do is slip it into the sleeve and I am on my way.

This of course will not work for everybody’s situation, but it works great for me and I wanted to share it. And maybe someone can adapt the idea to suit their needs.

Ironically I do not have a picture of the iPhone in the finished design, this is due to the fact I was taking the pictures with the iPhone. :cwm13:

Did you have to buy the whole handle? or can you just but the ball for the ram mount?
You have to buy the whole thing. The Ram mount is part of the grab bar.

Check with Timberwolf. There are a bunch of JC ordering parts from us at the end of the week and Timberwolf is putting the order together.

Remembered to snap some pics of my latest solution (using the Garmin mount that I mentioned above) last night:

*I usually have the charger wire going behind the phone and down the left side of the center console rather than draped across the face of the radio.

Will this mount work with the otter box cover? Like the spot for the camera.
Nah, I dont believe it will. I am pretty sure it only works with the Lifeproof 4/4S case

In all honesty, I didnt upgrade to an iPhone5 because I wanted to keep this case. When they release the iPhone5 case, it didnt have the same accessories as the 4, so I am not giving it up just yet!

After reading this thread, I ordered the same Ram Mount parts as Trembley used. I also use my phone as a GPS and wanted it easily visible when driving, so I mounted mine like this. Made a metal plate for extra support on the back side of the dash panel, and this thing is rock solid!
