I think I might have blown out a shock over the weekend during some pretty tough wheeling. I have a 2014 JKUR with a teraflex spacer leveling kit and 35"ko2's on stock rims with 1.5" spacers. My question is if I'm going to replace my shocks can I use longer shock for a 2.5"-3.5" lift on my jeep as I plan on a coil lift down the road just not sure when?? Or should I just replace the one bad shock and upgrade when it comes time for the lift??

The key consideration here is that you must have bumpstop sufficient such that the shock never reaches full compression (where the shock becomes the bump-stop and gets wrecked).

If your leveling kit has extended bump-stops, you can have shocks with a compressed length bumpstop-longer than stock. If there's no extended bumpstops installed, you cannot have longer shocks or you'll destroy them.

There are other things to consider too, like a longer shock may allow for springs to become un-seated and fall out during full articulation, or sway bar links could invert at articulation and destroy the sway bar. In the short term, it's quite likely your only real issue would be making sure compressed length lines up with your bumpstop but you really need to consider everything


Before doing anything like this, I'd highly recommend doing a lot of reading and fully understanding the constraints on shock lengths and how you select a shock length. This will really help to eliminate possibly regrettable decisions.

So I replaced both rear shocks with monroe reflex and the ride is the same as the stock shocks just maybe a tad stiffer but maybe that's just in my head. I researched a lot of other brands but kept coming back to the monroe because of the price. So if you need to replace your worn out oem shocks or if you blow one up like I did I would recommend the monroe reflex if you like the stock ride. The only negative is that the color of the new shocks doesn't match the old ones... but that's nothing some spray paint can't fix.
