Hi all. Been lurking about for a little while now. Bought a 09 Sunburst Sahara Unlimited a few days ago. Due to the deals buying off the lot, I did not get the towing package. I would like to regear my Sahara. It seems pretty easy and inexpensive to pick up Rubi gears when people do swaps. My question is, can I put the Rubicon 4.10s in my Dana 30 front axle? I know I need new carriers, but since the 4.10s come from a Dana 44, will they work in my Dana 30?

Eventually I will get bigger tires and probably want to regear again, but for now, it would be great to get rid of the 3.21s.

Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks.

nope, it would need to be gears made for the d30. Sorry

However, keep an eye open. People are selling the 4.10'a out of thier d30s all the time. HOwever, if you are going to be paying to have the gears done you might as well get 4.88's if it is in the budget

What size tires do you plan on running?

I agree, there isn't much of a benefit going from 3.73's (assuming that is what you have) to 4.10's. If you are going to spend the muuuula...get 4.88's. That way if you go bigger later on you won't have worry about re-gearing.

Thanks for the info. I hoped it might but I kinda figured it wouldn't work. I am relatively mechanically inclined and planned to do the work myself, so I figured I would save some loot going to 4.10s now, and then decide later how much bigger (or smaller as the case may be) I want to go.

WTF - I am not sure how big I will go. Some days I figure I will get a small lift (2.5" to 3") and then go with 33's or 34's. Then other days I want 4" or 6" of lift and 35's or 37's. I just kinda figured I wanted to keep it stock for a while and see what I end up enjoying (mud, rocks, just basic 2 tracks) and build up from there. Having said that... stock 3.21s suck. When I test drove the JK, I drove a black one with the towing package and the 3.73s. It wasn't a Porsche or anything, but it wasn't bad. I decided on an orange model which came without the towing pack and have quickly decided that the 3.21s are way too tall.

My thought about the 4.10s was that it would be inexpensive to pick up some gears with low-ish miles and have a much more comfortable drive and decided on a shorter set later on when I lift and buy tires. I guess I didn't think about the people with X's who order 4.10s, which is why I asked about the Rubi. I will poke around and see if I can find someone with an X and 4.10s and see about buying those.

Thanks all! Any more suggestions and input would be greatly appreciated!!

I suppose I should have clarified... I have the 6 speed. A little more leeway is what I understand... true? I of course want a good mix as the Jeep is primarily my DD. I was thinking of the 4.10s for 33's with a 2.5" lift and maybe 4.88s for 35s with 4" of lift. I can't see myself doing 37s and any higher than 4", but ya never know! Although I think the wife wouldn't be too thrilled with 6" of lift and 37s.

On that note (and highjacking my own thread) should the height of my lift influence the gears I choose? I don't think it would make a difference, but I am newbie, so I should ask.

Thanks all!!

I thought with the 4 door you didn't need to worry about driveshafts till you hit 4". With a 2.5" lift I need driveshafts? Both front and rear?

Ben

As an afterthought... if I snag someone's gears, do I need an install kit? I only have about 200 miles on my jeep. I know I need new carriers since I am moving up from 3.21s.

Thanks

2.5 you would be fine. I would say more then 3" you should be thinking about it. MOst likely you will only need to replace the front. My 2dr has right about 4 inches. The rear is ok but about at its max. THe front is beyond max and taking its last breaths of life.

YOu will need an install kit. YOu will be fine without getting the bearings.

Are you considering doing the gearing yourself? Just curious if you checked into what all is involved. It is doable but just based on your previous questions it may be something you might want to have a shop do. I don't mean that in a rude way. MOst people do not set up their own gears

I agree, had 2 very experinces buddies willing to help me and that was hard enough then... Lots of patience, and very exact measuring (preloads/torque/ect..) is needed... not for the usual home mechanic to do..

I am pretty handy in the garage, but have never done gears before. Yes, my thought was to tackle the project myself, with the help of a friend who has done it. Maybe I won't. I have not been to the local 4x4 shop yet to see what they might charge to swap the gears. If its not crazy, I might let them handle it. Just doing research! Thanks for the input.
