The beaches near me are not crowded either. Oh wait… there are no beaches near me unless you consider 1200 miles close

The Texas coast has a very gradual ascent towards the shore. In some areas you can wade fish VERY far out before the water gets more than waist deep. On a calm tranquil day (like after a northern blows through), the water is as smooth as glass as far as you can see. However, that way of thinking, is why many people didn't take hurricane Ike seriously. It was listed as a cat. 2 storm and many never thought that it could actually produce a cat. 4 storm surge...but it did, which is why so many homes were wiped completely off the map... FWIW
