Don't waste you money. By the time the thing is going off, the officer already has your speed. Other than that they go off randomly from far off officers and such so they just annoy you.

And, when you do get stopped, the officer is more likely to write you the ticket because you are trying to beat the system.

You have a Jeep now. It can provide all the adrenaline you need off road. Slow down and enjoy life. If you still want to get one over on the presiding authority, join and be active in any association that keeps trails open for wheelers.

Valentine One's are great. If you can't swing the $, Bell is good for the $. Get the best one you can afford- you do get what you pay for. If you buy junk, you get false warnings and no "real" warning when there IS a cop- Mark W.

Not true- especially on surface streets in cities. My radar detector has saved me more times than I can count.

Yes on the highway, you only stand about a 50% chance. Yes, 50%- Laser you "might" pick up early, but odds are against you (yes, I have indeed picked up laser scatter early enough to be prepared). And radar you most definitely can pick up early. If they are using an "always on" radar, you'll pick it up miles away. The tricky part is if they are using an "instant on" radar- you can still pick it up miles away. But since it isn't a continuous signal, and can be perceived as just a random trash signal leading the driver into a false sense that there is no cops around. But hell- with my JK and 35's running 4.10 gears, I really have no use for my detector on the highway because I'm not going fast enough for the cops to care. The real use for me is around town. And it has proven plenty affective around town.

lol. You know how many tickets I have written to people that had their radar detectors? A lot. Also, EVERY time I see a detecter, a ticket is written. Often times for full speed because you are only trying to get away with it. And if I see you tucking something under your seat, your most likely going to get your car searched, so try to be smooth with your hiding techniques. lol

Heres a thought, SLOW DOWN!

Maybe somebody should make a DNR detector too so we can wheel anywhere we please.:shaking:

Radar Detectors only work IF the officer is lazy enough to keep the radar running, but most of us use Laser now. If we point the laser at the center of the windshield you may get a reading, but it wont pick up a reading from a beam the size of a dime from 1000 + ft away pointed at your grill. :smokin:

I'm guessing TX must be different. Because I pick up radar every day. Laser is not used hardly at all. And where it is used is mainly on streets that are notorious for speeders (mostly highways). The only time I've ever seen laser used on a surface street was in school zones... Also lets not forget that you can't be rolling with laser. The majority of cops around here are rolling with radar on.

Your comment "Radar Detectors only work IF the officer is lazy enough to keep the radar running"... Well that only applies if their only job is to issue speeding tickets.

Sounds like at that point your only job is issuing speeding tickets. So you're saying the laser is just a money making machine?

X2 I don't use one now, but when I used a V1, it would pick up radar all the time, and pretty accurately too.

Unless you are the only person on the road, you will nearly always detect the radar as it is being used on other vehicles, and here in TX you will come across police vehicles with it running all the time.

NY as well. I drove NY->FL and back many times transporting cars, and my old Bell paid for itself MANY times over. I don't speed much, but when I was doing that run, I pretty much had to to both stay awake, and to make decent time- that's a LONG, BORING trip, especially VA->SC- Mark W.

Many of the radars have a "fastest" option now. Basically what this means is it will pick up the strongest signal from a pack of cars, but will also show the fastest vehicle, which is then visually confirmed by the officer so even in a pack we get the guy that's going fastest.

It's not like the old days where as long as there was a semi next to you you were invisible.

And the laser isn't a money making maching. It's a traffic enforcing machine. It works great and it takes all of about a second to use. Stop the car, roll down the window, point and shoot. It's not like you have to be a traffic unit to use one.

That's not a 100% correct, actually the current top rated detector has a 2,200 feet capability which was bumped up from it's former linear feet range. Bottom line is if your the lone rangers speeding out by yourself and you get tagged it's over because it's instant, catching the bouncing signals from an officer trying to sight someone in is the best hope for anyone else who wishes to speed.

Personally I find it difficult to speed in these non-aerodynamic barns on wheels :D

have a v1 hardwired above my rearview mirror

wouldnt leave home without, has saved me countless times

also great device for catching cops on their BS, like i said my V1 has gotten me out of countless tickets, has definitely paid for itself

i do drive fast and way above the speed limit, as most drivers in my area.

It's kind of funny how the polices a quick to say Detectors aren't worth the money, but there is still a big market. Detectors are a tool and if you don't know how to use it you get yourself in trouble. They are designed to be a sensitive a possible so you have time to react. If your the loan rider your going to get nabbed.

When I was in the Navy they had a visitor from the CHP give us a speech about driving safety, and somewhere in that speech came out the infamous radar detectors don't work. We'll being an Avionics guy and school'd on all kinds of radar/laser detector and jammers I felt it was my responsibility to correct the misgiven information. I was quickly smacked down by my C.O. and told the cops alway win. I later had a chat (expected) with my Senior Chief where he explained to me the same. My response was; So the Captian only wants his radar dectector jammer to work if he's targeted, it doesn't matter if something else is being targeted and he may be next? The Senior was quick to smack my head and finish with the typical; we're not going to have this discussion again:D
