I got a Jeep buddy that has changed directions in a XJ project.. He is giving me an old truck 305 out of a 80's model truck.. I know the 305 and 350 share a lot of parts.. Any advice would be welcomed..

How complete is the motor and what do you have in mind? Mild or wild?

This is all AIR (As I Recall)

There was a range of years where the newer blocks had pass side dipsticks, earlier versions was on drivers side...

Shade tree racers used to slap 350 heads on 305's to get some extra oomph from the larger valves.

The block is the same so all your accessories, starter, dist, alt, PS, AC, intake, headers, etc transition over. Pretty sure the water pumps are the same too. Bellhousing as well.

It's been awhile since I ran in those circles so I'm a little rusty on SBC. :smokin:

Should make a nice powerplant for your YJ

Sorry for the multiple edits, told you had been awhile...

I am like you.. I used to run in those crowds.. I had a buddy that put 350 heads on his parents 83 Monte Carlo with a 305..

I am waiting on the time to go get it.. I talked my buddy that has it and he said.. No hurry.. It is sitting in his shop in the back of his house.. From my understanding, it is a complete motor ready for a drop in... He got it for an XJ project.. But got a 5.7 diesel and is going that route.. I told him that the 5.7L diesel was a dog.. I would love to find a nice 4bt Cummins..

I am just going mild.. Right now my YJ has a 2.5L 4 banger with 4th gear syncro basically GONE.. I am running a Ford 8.8 in the rear.. But I still have the D30 so I don't want to rip that up.. I am going to go with a carb setup.. :D Going as completely mechanical as possible.. I hate computers..:laughing:

305 should be plenty of power. Every one and their brother make the motor swap hardware for them. All Chevy sb engines have same bolt pattern for the tranny. So u can use any tranny u want from Chevy. Also as long as u aren't super heavy on your right foot your d30 should hold up fine.. get u a one wire alternator and a you will be able to strip a lot of wire out from under dash and hood.if u want really good fuel mileage I recomend a 450 - 500 cfm carb. Any more than 500 your waisting money any gas. A great mild cam for that motor is an rv cam. Lots of power and torque from idle to about 5000rpm. Gives nice little lope to engine too but not so bad u lose vacuum.

Tranny for 305

Depends on what you plan to do with it. I have a 350 4 bolt main in an 88 YJ and have it paired with the TH350 tranny. I really wish that I would have put a 700R4 in it to have the overdrive option as I still like to take it to the streets. If you only plan to run it offroad, the TH350 is, like the motor, cheap and easy to build and repair as there are tons of parts out there for them.
