I tore apart a broken lightimg fixture and scavenged the 1w LEDs and their lenses. The lense basically gives it a slightly diffused spot pattern. After playing with ideas in my head I think I'll mount them in the grill. I have enough to do two rows of 14 so four per slot in over under pairs. 10 are bright cool white and the rest are slightly dimmer warm white.

I did a quick test tonight with 8 of the brights, a jump box and some packing tape.

Its from a Color Kinetics iWhite version of a Colorblast. They are a three color (RGB or in this case 5200k and 3600k white) outdoor rated fixture. It's built into an aluminum frame with a glass front all glued together so if a chip fails you throw out the holes hole thing. I smashed the glass and scavenged.

I know superbrightleds.com has cheap parts you could use. Just make sure you get a lens with a tight focus.
