I've got a 2010 Wrangler Sport.

2 months ago I noticed that sometimes when I went to start the car, nothing would happen. No clicking, no cranking. But ignition lights on, indicators worked etc. I would try again and then presto, it would start immediately. Happened only a couple of times and since it was winter and I wasn't using it, I sort of ignored it...

The problem got worse. This morning it wouldn't start after three attempts. First I checked the battery. 10.75V. Suspicious. Original battery. But maybe something was draining it. So I put the jumpers on the other car and it started immediately. Ran it for 30 minutes. Stopped the engine. Battery read 12.7V. Tried to start it. Nothing. But still had ignition lights. Checked the voltage. 10.7V. Suspected bad battery.

Jumped the care and went to the store to replace it. New battery installed. 12.7V. Went to start it. Fired up straight away. Went inside and paid. Came outside. Wouldn't start! Tried 3 times. Went inside to ask the guy for a jump. Came outside. Started up! The guy had one of those looks on his face like 'Surrre.' Went home.

If you try to start it 4 times, it might fire up perfectly twice, then the other two times not at all. Sounds like a connection problem.

I've read a lot on this and plenty of people seem to have had problems with the ignition actuator pin breaking off, a $30-40 Dorman part. But this seems to be for '07 and older jeeps. I don't see this part listed for a JK.

Does a JK use this part or something else? I haven't seen any posts for problems like this on a JK.

I dunno about use of that part you reference but if that were me, I'd go back to and thru each & every electrical ground that came with the Jeep plus what I've added to ground as far as accessories. Why? Because that for-all-the-world sounds like an improperly grounded circuit is in your electrical system. Worth a shot. :jeep2:

Sounds about right ^^^. I had very similar experience with my 2008 a couple years ago. There was a loose ground. Dealership caught mine so not exactly sure where that particular ground was ( somewhere around drivers side foot-well or fire-wall area iirc). Again, as suggested... quite possibly a grounding issue.

I put the car up on the ramp, got underneath and checked the three electrical connections on the starter. Nothing loose, nothing obvious. A touch of surface rust. Moved cables around. Nothing moves.

Had a left field idea. I switched to a new key I recently had made. It started 5 times out of 5. I'm going to drive it with this key for a while. If the problem ever reoccurs, I know the key ISN'T the problem.

Sporadic issues. Very hard to diagnose. It's binary. Either nothing when you turn the ignition to start or it fires up straight away. You can get three of one in a row then one of the other.

I'll get back after using the other key for a while.

It seems to be a fairly common problem and I have the same problem with my 08 jk. It's been happening for a long time. I just shift into neutral and it starts most of the time. Sometimes I have to row through the gears then to park of neutral to start it. Brought it to the dealer, ( lifetime warranty) and left it. When I went to pick it up they said it only happened one time to them. I told them it was sporadic. I also told them, because I was pissed because they have never fixed anything I have brought it in for the first time, "how many Fing times do you want it to not start to find the no start issue? What happens if it happens to you a second time, your going to say, it only happened twice?" Needless to say they didn't fix it. I hate them, I've owned my JKUR for ten years and they are bumbling idiots ! I repair fire systems in Casinos around Lake Tahoe and Reno. Just imagine if they had a fire and I said, "sorry the fire system didn't work and people died but I couldn't fix the problem". I would get fired and sued but they can screw up for ten years and it's okay. I think the problem is inside the shifter console, the neutral/park safety switch. Please let us know if you find the problem.

I've had similar issues on my 09, with now ANOTHER starter (last one dead after 7 starts) hopefully problem solved.....
