One of the best kept off road secrets is wheeling in the Kingman, Arizona area. There are 40 to 50 named trails with over 10,000 miles of two tracks just in Mohave County alone. This is the county that was able to stop BLM from closing trails with a little help from Ric Swats.
Now these trails aren’t just your everyday trail where you are wheeling moderate trail then hit difficult obstacles a couple of times on the trail. These trails are one big, long difficult obstacle with huge rocks, ledges and waterfall climbs winding through the Hualapai Mountains or the Black Mountains. A mile long trail could take up to five or six hours. The first time I went to Kingman I wheeled the trail Homecourt. I thought we were on the trail, but it turns out we were actually on the two track to the trail. The trail follows a wash and during dry season the trail is one long rocky obstacle. This is where I wheeled my first rock ledge. It was my first difficult off road trail wheeling with the big boys. It was so amazing and empowering! This was the Fall of 2019
These trails to the trail are challenging in a different way especially if you are afraid of heights. There’s a lot of tight curves and switchbacks up and down the mountains. It’s like a double bonus. This is the case for most of the trails in Mohave County.
Then in 2020, I went to Kingman to wheel two other times. Twister and Wayne’s World are two fun moderately difficult trails near each other. There is Safelite in the Black Mountains where you wheel up a challenging climb of several rock faces which during wet season are a series of waterfalls. An amazingly scenic and challenging trail with by passes. Then there is Secret Pass with more great scenery and cool Native American history to this trail. Candy Ass with a gnarly waterfall climb. I have videos of some of these trails on YouTube.
If you are ever in the Kingman, Arizona area look up the group Rocks and Wheels (RAW). They are a great group of wheelers who can take you out for some amazing technical wheeling.
Near Kingman is Oatman AZ off Route 66. A cool little mining village with lots of roaming donkeys.
It's a panty / bra tree with stripper pole in the middle of the desert!
The man helping me through this obstacle is Larry Whatley! (RIP) He was one of three Jeepers killed in a train accident when they were coming off a day of wheeling. He was an amazing wheeler and super great man!!! He will be deeply missed in the Jeep Community.
