Max. tire size

Can anyone tell me what's the largest tire size you can fit on a stock JK without rubbing?

I don't need much width, just a little more clearance. Will a 31.5" tire fit without rubbing?

Im running a 285/75r16 on my stock JK. I am using aftermarket wheels though--crager soft 8's with 5 inch of backspace (55$ each) I dont have a lift and am having no rubbing issues (size is 33.1(ish) x 11.50 x 16)

Im using Mickey Thompson MTZ's
Rubicon's come stock with 32" tires, I know you can get (or could get) and upgraded 17" wheel and 32" A/T combo on the 07 X. So I would say a tire that measures 32" is safe, after that you will probably get a minor rub witha 33"
No rub with my 33's...... there are a couple on here as well that have the same combo... cragar 8's with 33's and no rub...
285 x 70 x 17;)
i have 285's and a 2" BB on my X and have about 1/8" of clearance at full flex in the rear.
i must have the tall 285's
BFG 285's are just a tad taller then the OEM 255's, and still shy of 33" by a miniscule fraction...no rub a dub dub here

Not to second guess....

But the BFG MTZ in 285/75r16 as measured on a 8 inch wide rime comes out to almost exacly 33.12 inches when at 28PSI. And just a bit over 11.5 inches across.

Just for what its worth
tire size help

I have stock 255/75R17's and I was wondering how big of a tire size I can go with out putting a lift. Remind you though I am REALLY new at all this.
I noticed everyone talks about craiger rims but no one seems to be running on 17's.
Is there a reason for that? I would like to replace my stock rims with one from craiger and get the same size.
Any input, opinions what have you is greatly appreciated.
thanks.

There are a few people running cragar 17's, you can't go wrong with steal wheels...nice and cheap and get the job done.

I'm running the 285/70/17 BFG KM2's, and they are just shy of 33"...they fit perfectly with no lift needed. ;)
well dustoff, what can I say.. I'm quoting almost direct specs from manufacturer as measured on an 8" wide rim. That directly corelates to what I have measured on my Jeep...

Then again.. maybe I must have gotten the plus sized 285/75r16 Mickey Thompson MTZ's....
Another question, Can you run 285/70/17 on the stock wheels with no lift?

Sigh............that's what I've been saying....one more time..........I have BFG KM2's, size 285x70x17 mounted on stock 17" OEM/MOPAR/Rubicon/MOAB or whatever you would like to call the 17" factory/stock wheels, with NO LIFT and NO PROBLEMAS!:shaking:

you never said anywhere "on stock rims" there are many aftermarket companies that are making 17" wheels. Just wanted to clarify, thanks for the input.

Do you mind posting a pic of your?

Thanks
Something that EVERYONE needs to remember, is MOST tires run smaller than advertised. NOT ALWAYS but usually. AND the rim width will also play a part in the height. For instance I'm running BFG KM's on my CJ I have 15X10 rims on it. My tires are about 34" tall. My spare is on a 15X8" rim (one of my original set of the 35's long story) and it is taller than the others.

If you go to a tire store USUALLY if they have the tires, they can mount one for you and you can see if it fits. Honestly you sould be able to get a 285x70x17 on it no problem (hence dust off) and seriously if you really need it, slap a BB lift on it. most people will sooner or later want a lift.
FYI: I put a set of 285/70/17 BFg A/T's on yesterday, on stock wheels and the only place they rub is turning at full lock. The tires rub the front sway bar.
3 questions.

by going with 285x70x17's, do you notice the jeep work harder at highway speeds?

does the speedometer still read correctly?

will they void the warranty?

No not really with the 285's... unless you have an auto then maybe a little bit harder.

No speedo does not read correctly... you need to get it reflashed for that.(any tire change will do that to the speedo)--its not off a lot just about 10%.

no, they wont void the warrenty..

YES... they help and make the jeep look like a jeep and not a car
I asked about putting a larger size tire and he said that if something broke and they found that the larger size tire was the cause then it would not be a warranty issue. He said I had to use the same size but that I could change tread design.

I guess that means no super swampers and a lift kit.:hmph:
