After chopping my grill I installed a set of 3/4" round LED marker lights to be used as signal lights. The only problem is that they're flashing fast, the same as it would if the bulb was burnt out.

After searching on Google I've figured out that there's no flasher on JK's and that the fast flash function is controlled by the TIPM. What I couldn't find was an actual solution to this problem..... is there one?

I'm guessing that the answer is yes b/c Recon makes those smoked colour fender lights and they don't fast flash.

The lights I used have the following spec's:
  • Amp Draw = 50ma
  • Voltage = 7.5-14 VDC

Hopefully the above spec's will help me get an answer b/c when it comes to electrical work, I'm surprised I was even able to wire up the lights to the point where I could get them to flash at all. :shaking:

Well, I'm no electrician, but V=IR, which I think would yield the necessary resistance for the LED, just like the ORO LiteDOT's and stuff. So, if V=IR, and the JK runs a 12v system, and I (amps = 50 mA, which is .050 A) = .05, then the voltage difference is 4.5 V at most, so you're looking at a 90 ohm resistor I think. Double check though...

PSC does have some.

I have them on mine and am running the Recons up front and the OROs in the back. I added the resistors when I installed the Recons back in Nov and had fast flash ONLY on the passenger's side. I checked, double checked and checked the wiring again to make sure it is installed correctly...

I added the OROs last month and wired in the resistors hoping that two more resistors in the circuit (just a theory - no clue really) would help with the fast flash and now it only does it some times and still only on the passengers side.

Marcus at River City Offroad spoke with with the folks at ORO and they said that there really is no fix. I am sure the same goes for the Recon lights. I will find the thread and post it up.

I am waiting on someone to figure it out.

I'm going to give the short version of this because I lost some details in the translation but I just had a very interesting conversation with our friends at ORO.

The way that the JK is wired doesn't allow it to read whether or not a bulb is there, it reads the amp pull from each individual bulb throughout the entire vehicle. So if you change the left front turn signal to an LED bulb that light will blink fast...LOL

There are a couple of ways to fix the fast blink, but none of them work 100% of the time because the computer in the JK is too smart.

You can use the resistor we've been talking about here and deal with the heat buildup that we've all been concerned about.

The other fix is to wire a 3157 bulb back into the wiring between the factory wires and the new LiteDOTs and paint the bulb black. You'll want to secure it in the inner fender to keep it from getting banged around and broken. The paint will keep you from putting on a light show at stop lights.

The light bulb will trick the computer most of the time to believe it is receiving the right load at the tail light bulb which will result in Ritalin for your tail lights. (Works most of the time but they still might get a little crazy)

If you have more questions about this I would highly recommend chatting with Steve @ ORO.

He also mentioned that the LiteDOTs have changed to a higher LED count and new circuit board which they believe will end the issues with durability.

I am pretty sure the same thing is going on with the Recon fronts. They came with some little chicken shit resistors that I tried to use to no avail. I have the PSC resistors in all four corners and they get HOT.... I am not going to wire in a bulb just to get rid of the fast flash, I would rather just live with it. I have no clue why one side is good to go and the other is not....

The issue really is that the system is looking for a specific resistance from the bulb, and when you replace it with an LED, you change the resistance from 35 ohms to .5-3 ohms (depending on the LED) and the system is unhappy and tells you that the bulb is burnt out due to that. The PSC resistors do that to a point by placing a dummy load on the system, so that it "thinks" there is a bulb still there, but you need to match the system properly. The only real way to get it to work like that is to relocate the bulb to another location, so that it is present in the system knows it is there, but it is not used as the signal.

The other way is to not use the TIPM... But that is up to you... :thefinger:

Thanks for the info on PS. They have resisters for the the tail lights, and they actually have what looks to be a built in resister on 3/4" marker lights like the ones I bought. Had I known that it required a resister I might of bought them..... although mine only cost $7.95 each vs PS's $28 each.

Maybe they'll let me know what type of resister to use.

EDIT: I should of refreshed the screen before responding..... I didn't get to see Ron's or zjr's responses before I posted a reply.

I actually had a similar conversation with Co4lo a little while ago and he said "I was working with ORO last year on a solution. They sent me some pretty cool little black boxes to wire inline with the rear Lite Dots. They made the flashing slow down, but then the computer figured it out and they started flashing fast after a couple days".

Apparently a proper solution has yet to be found. Why they decided to over engineer the signal lights is beyond me. I've never heard of tons of problems with flasher units before, to the point that they needed to figure out a way for a computer to control all the lights/signals and dodads.

I put an 3/4" LED on my front fender to use as a blinker.

I'm not quite sure what you did or if this is what your trying to do. I didn't need any resistor I hooked it directly to the front blinker.

I have LEDs in the front and back. You need to run a 6 ohm 50W resistor to the power and the outside ground wire.

you can get these on eBay or lots of places online.
