Obama breaks promise on campaign finance

(CNN) -- You may have heard that Wednesday night Barack Obama will be on five different TV networks speaking directly to the American people.

He bought 30 minutes of airtime from the different networks, a very expensive purchase. But hey, he can afford it. Barack Obama is loaded, way more loaded than John McCain, way more loaded than any presidential candidate has ever been at this stage of the campaign.

Just to throw a number out: He has raised well over $600 million since the start of his campaign, close to what George Bush and John Kerry raised combined in 2004.

Without question, Obama has set the bar at new height with a truly staggering sum of cash. And that is why as we approach this November, it is worth reminding ourselves what Barack Obama said last November.

One year ago, he made a promise. He pledged to accept public financing and to work with the Republican nominee to ensure that they both operated within those limits.

Then it became clear to Sen. Obama and his campaign that he was going to be able to raise on his own far more cash than he would get with public financing. So Obama went back on his word.

He broke his promise and he explained it by arguing that the system is broken and that Republicans know how to work the system to their advantage. He argued he would need all that cash to fight the ruthless attacks of 527s, those independent groups like the Swift Boat Veterans. It's funny though, those attacks never really materialized.

The Washington Post pointed out recently that the bad economy has meant a cash shortage among the 527s and that this election year they have been far less influential.

The courageous among Obama's own supporters concede this decision was really made for one reason, simply because it was to Obama's financial advantage.

On this issue today, former Sen. Bob Kerrey of Nebraska, an Obama supporter, writes in The New York Post, "a hypocrite is a person who puts on a false appearance of virtue -- who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings. And that, it seems to me, is what we are doing now."

For this last week, Sen. Obama will be rolling in dough. His commercials, his get-out-the-vote effort will, as the pundits have said, dwarf the McCain campaign's final push. But in fairness, you have to admit, he is getting there in part on a broken promise.

LOL

Change is Good.

:D

I think the overwhelming flood of sub-$100 donations was unexpected, but so many people sent him money, he would have been foolish to turn it down.

Almost no one was sending money to McCain, so he would have been foolish to not accept the public financing, as without the guaranteed hand-out, he'd be broke.

They are politicians, why anyone is surprised they do what they can to win is beyond me.

Someone who changes course based upon new facts is not scary. Someone who can't do that is scarier. If a promise broken hurt someone, that's another story...and then the context is important.

For example, a thread was posted that essentially said that the Democrats were using terrorist tactics by carving a "B" into the face of a Republican Campaigner - "showing what kind of nut jobs are Democrats".

Context = The Republican Campaigner carved the "B" into her OWN face...thereby "showing what kind of nut jobs supported the Republicans".

Further Context = She was crazy, and, represented no one but herself....and the acts of one crazy Republican do not reflect upon the sanity of the OTHER Republicans.

I think we need to go a bit deeper than the superficial drivel if we are going to truly understand the real issues, and see through the smoke screen of fake issues.

Do you mean McCain saying HE will fix the economy, or Obama saying we should not continue Bush's course?
Last I heard, McCain said he would NOT continue on Bush' course.....:shaking::shaking::shaking:

Much has been "alluded" to by many socialist left wing nutz on this forum that anti-Obama folk are inherently racist, or just can't accept a black man as President, or that we are voting for McCain as a vote against Obama, or some other non-sensical drivel, so I submit this interesting video...you be the judge...

Too many derogatory adjectives, and not enough meat.

George Washington was a radical leftist who helped to overthrow the government.

McCain voted with Bush ~ 92% of the time...not much of a maverick, unless you consider Bush's views to be those of a maverick as well.

Obama is saying we need change. Of course we do, the current situation sucks. Is HE the one TO change it? Probably not.

Is McCain the one to change it? Probably not...he stated the economy is strong and a bunch of other elitist ideas, because HIS economy was strong...and then FOUND OUT that statistically, everyone ELSE's economy was NOT strong.

McCain says we should not spread wealth around...which, would mean NO taxes, period, ever.

Why should MY money go to a school to teach kids, when MY kids are grown already? Couldn't I just hire a tutor if I want any teaching done?

Why should MY money go to fund an army to defend everyone ELSE? Should I be allowed to just pay a body guard, and no money for national defense if that's what I wanted?

Why should MY money go to pay garbagemen who ALSO pick up OTHER people's garbage? Couldn't I just take my OWN garbage to the dump if I wanted to, and NOT pay taxes?

Why should MY money go to transportation infrastructure, like building roads and bridges OTHER people get to drive on? Why couldn't I just use a Jeep or boat to get around instead of paying taxes?

So, McCain will abolish taxes, no more spreading the money around, that's a bad thing...he will end it according to his campaign.

Cool, I have the jeep already...bring it ON!

Meat...try some meat...its good.

I don't like kool-aid, its like sugar water with food coloring...

And if the water in NJ were contaminated with Kool-aid, rather than the current toxic waste from the local industries that are allowed to pollute the environment to save money, so that some of that money will trickle down to the people, it might be an improvement.

We all have a choice of where our money goes. That is why we
vote for candidates at all levels of government that best represent us.

I don't want my tax dollars going to the indolent, crack heads, breeders, et al, and vote accordingly.
Unfortunately priell, you have thousands in the city of Brotherly Love who have their hand out waiting for the big Osama payday...to think I lived in Philly for three years...WTF happened?

And how much did we just invest in our future tax money to the financial industry.... So close to Obama money I wonder if everyone sent the $100 to a recovery fund of sorts would we have just avoided the mini depression we are in? I think not but ma both republicans and democrats thought it was worth $700 million anyways.

I was chatting with a small businessman in town during popwarner practice. He is on the verge of folding because he made a bad choice of buying a desiel truck for his small business 1 yr ago. He travels 100 miles round trip on most jobs and has been paying almost double in fuel which has killed his profits. So for almost a year now he has worked with little income and has sold every extra thing he owned to keep afloat. Will the govn't bail out his business since he made the wrong choices. No so why did they think a bad bank was worth it.

No matter how we look at it $600 or $700 million, I would of invested in different areas to get our economy moving. Like infrastructure for Bio fuel stations or Aircar suport stations or even subsidised fuel by eliminating fuel tax for 1 year with the $700 million dollars.
