I had a CJ in 76 and I loved it. I have the JK in 07 and love it more.
It's still very capable but has been refined in 30 years and the improvements include comfort to the driver and passenger(s) along with good axles (D44) that are already locked a 4-lo range that is adequate for most trails.
The stance is wider, which has bitten the Jeep vehicle in the behind ever since it "failed" highway standards roll over tests. The wheel base is longer, even without the extra set of doors this also improves stability plus adds more room for stuff. When was the last time you heard someone driving a Jeep complaining about too much room.
On the complaint side it is adequately powered but a little more umph under the hood would have been nice.
Mine is my daily driver but also goes out on trails. I would recommend one to a friend.
I had a 77 CJ-7 with the AMC 304 (high rise manifold, cam, high compression piston and headers), 3-speed stick, ragtop and no carpet. Thats when this sport took off.
I now have the JK and love it. I am a little nervous about what this one can compared to the old one. I will say I miss the 304.
