So....my old Commander Limited is surrounded by weeds now because I bought a JK:grin2: It is paid for and has a lot of miles, so the logical thing in my mind is a rock crawler or a 1 of a kind weekend warrior camping rig (don't tell my wife). I've never built a suspension from scratch before, so does anyone have any suggestions for where to start with some serious suspensions mods? I'm thinking the whole suspension, axles and all, are coming out. Probably the driveline, too. Coilovers all around, at least 38's, maybe a bio-diesel swap....I'm not worried about it being a daily driver of course, but I don't want a full-on buggy either. Anyway, just throwing it out there for suggestions. Thanks everyone!

I always thought you could not polish a turd and make the KJ ( liberty) model Jeep cool no matter what you tried but then BDS rose to the challenge and did this

so, there is certainly hope for your Commander. However, it seems to get that Liberty ( turbo-diesel,fwiw!) that capable and 'cool' they basically had to affix an entire tricked-out JK suspension and axles ,etc under the thing so unless you're tryin to get some attn as a vendor in the industry , it is likely gonna take some degree of investment to get a Commander up to wheeling specs. Of course, that is dependant upon what you describe as wheeling, heh

Search for "BDS Suspension Jeep Liberty build" as I know I recall JP magazine as well as John Hendrick's CRAWL magazine have both done build articles on it. Also , Pirate4x4 likely has more data than you could shake an ORI strut at on building something custom like that.

I'd scrap it and get an older XJ. You can find them pretty decent and they have good support in their current form. Granted it would not be a one-off like the Commander would be.
