Anyway dialed in the SWR, did a radio check and ...... Silence. Not even a trucker on 19. Finally a couple of days later I did get a radio check passing through Lincoln, Ca. I hope it works well enough for trail rides.

I haven't used a CB in 20 years, is CB land really that quiet these days or do I have a problem with my setup?

Cb land is extremely quiet. A lot of truckers have moved to better technology. If the swr is dialed in i would not worry. If short distance is ok and only for trails you will be fine. If you want better distance get a ham radio

You almost have to surf to catch someone on cb these days or be near a freeway. Ham is deffinetly the way to go!

If your CB is quiet during the daytime, you've done something wrong, or you live in a strange place. I'm hearing Oklahoma all day long, because the skip is in on the 11m band due to the sunspot cycle which renders the troposphere opaque to 11m radio during the day (while the solar radiation is modifying the troposphere), meaning that 11m signals bounce all over. Renders the CB pretty much useful only on the trail for short distances with squelch well up, even there occasionally some motormouth from Alabama will break in.

2 meter FM amateur radio is where the hobby is going. FM sounds better than AM and 2M doesn't skip. Getting a ham license nowadays is easy peasy, I did study for a little bit using one of the free online web sites that does "flashcards", but not a *lot*, and only missed one question on the test -- and no morse code test nowadays, folks.
