I have one. Used it a couple times in snow, once in rocky area. Two out of three it worked ok as an anchor. Once in the snow it bit, but the snow structure couldn't hold Rex.

Back in the day used to use a flat boat anchor, but now I just hook to a tree or someone elses rig.

Yeah, I would choose a rock, tree, or rig over a pull pal. However when nothing else is around, then am anchor "may" be useful. (I don't like them and would use it if there is no other choice)

An oldtimer told me he had an axle ground down on one end and would hammer it in to the side of the road at an angle pointing away from the rig.

I never go alone, so the other rig is my choice.

I've only used mine when leading a group. No trees, rocks to use. No one in front to use.

I've talked to guys who swear by the axle trick. Never have seen it done.

I think a plough type boat anchor would work.
