I only use Metcal irons but they are not cheap

Metcal or Pace makes high-end gear... best quality, but probably not what you need if you're asking here. For a portable, I've always liked the Master Ultratorch butane irons. If you want 120v irons, Weller is a decent economical brand to go with. The big Weller gun is pretty standard-issue wiring soldering gun, but it is big and clunky. I prefer a pencil type iron... a 60W iron with a 1/8" tip will solder all of your basic wiring jobs, just don't use it for soldering circuit boards.

and don't use the lead free solder crap, try mcmaster carr, they have a good assortment of everything including irons, and anything else for that matter

i do not use a butane nor battery. And will not.

I have a Craftsman professional gun, works well for me. 400w initial heat? then 150w steady. I do a decent amount of thicker stuff, 10ga, and it works well.
