How Many Guys are Running Limiting Straps?

Fixing to install my RK 3.5 X Factor PRO Mid Arm and am curious if I should run limiting straps? I realize that if I have it bump stopped correctly a lot of people will say that you do t need them. Also having the Currie upper and lower rear spring retainers some will say that I don't need them. So what is the truth concerning the use of limiting straps? If I should use them what is the best way to mount them and where? Thank y'all again for the education!

I have them on the front of my rig. Coilovers can unwind a lot. When I finally put my rear coillovers on I'll have them on the rear also.

But it doesn't seem to me that you would need them. However I'll let some fab/build experts give the best advice.

That's the most obvious answer but how many JKs have you seen with the shock destroyed because of it?

If I drove in a manner in which the suspension could unload dramatically, I'd run them. But for slow crawling, I don't feel they are vital.

Coil spring retainers will be needed no doubt. IMO they should be included in all of RK kits.

Initially, I had the 2.5 inch stock mod system, included springs, front track bar w Bilstein 5100s and both my front coils have come out on 2 different occasions. No big deal really but its a PITA getting em back on out on the trail.

Limiting straps are one of the most overlooked parts of the suspension and are set up to protect your shocks just like bump stops are there to keep from bottoming out. They can also save wear and tear on your driveshafts from over extension. The best place I could find them was filthymotorsports.com in colorado. $27 each with free shipping. There are some photos of mine at the link below.

I am running a set in the front. As usmcdoc mentioned earlier, they are cheaper than shocks.

The lower end is bolted into the spring perch:

At the upper end, Teraflex offers a set of stubs that fit into a hole on the frame (from factory with hole) and weld into place:

I only went through one front shock before adding them. The shock used to be my limiting factor in the front but as it is now, the strap limits the shock at about 3/4" from full extension. Here's a link to TF's full set: JK limiting straps

I thought about adding them to the rear but at this time they are not needed. My limiting factor in the rear is my factory rear sway bar and links. They stop the rear shocks at about the same 3/4" from full extension. The shocks used to be the limit until I added a set of PP rear upper shock mounts. Which according to PP move the upper mounting location down 13/16" if I remember correctly. Which was a perfect amount for me.

They offer the straps in several different lengths. That is something that you'll have to determine by cycling your suspension.

(*edit)

The link I posted actually goes to Teraflex Plus' web site. I don't know the full details there but they are are more or less the same place/company as Teraflex. Teraflex Plus is in the same building and they are the retail sales outlet or something of the sort..., I guess.

They take quite a bit of stress, if a steel shaft on a shock can snap, so can a nylon strap.

I've seen people use braided steel cable and cable nuts with good effect, it's all about what you want to spend.

I have them as part of my Teraflex prerunner kit. They do come into play on the dunes at high speeds. Prevents everything from hyperextending when things get bouncy and high speed on the dunes.

You need to droop your axle to where your shocks bottom out and size the straps about 1" less then your max travel. The straps will stretch some so take that into account. The longer the strap the more it will stretch. You may have to add some mounting tabs or some people will buy them long enough to mount to the shock mounts. f you are going to add tabs you will be looking at between 12" and 16" depending on where you place them.

There is some info on set up here.
