I did a quick search and didn't see where this is mentioned, though I can't be the first person it has happened to. One of my heater hoses ruptured today. Vehicle is an '08 Rubi Unlimited. The top hose was in contact, for the past four years apparantly, with the metal EGR tube running into the cover up top. Anyway, it split. I did not notice until I stopped after a 10 mile trip from the house. Steam everywhere. I let it cool a bit then drove an extra mile to a local shop. They couldn't figure it out (we thought it might be transmission fluid, same color, same odor), so we loaded it up on their tow rig and took it to the dealer.

Long story short, it damage the head gasket. Fortunately for me I'm under the lifetime drivetrain warranty so the only out of pocket is the new hose (plus tow charge, which insurance reimburses). But I'm short a vehicle till Saturday.

A little warning to all to check this. It was preventable. Not by me of course as I shouldn't have to worry about something that obvious, but by Chrysler. They should have a heat shield there, reroute it, etc. But you can prevent it since Chrysler has made no effort to do so. It could save you a lot of problems down the road.

FYI, the tech noticed a misfire and the engine threw a code that indicated the head gasket issue. I trust this guy, so I took him at his word. He says it takes very little lost coolant for the 3.8 to create a bubble at the # 4 cylinder and blow the gasket. I had a nearly dry radiator and no temp gauge indication of a problem at all. Blew out most of the coolant in seven or eight minutes and I never knew it.

Can you post a pic of the area once you get the Jeep back to show us exactly where the hose is at risk?

After reading your post I checked my 08 Rubi Ulimited. My heater hoses dont touch and the hose closest to the metal EGR tube, along with the metal EGR tube both have aluminum-type heat shielding. Now I wonder why, either why your's didnt or why mine does?

I will post a photo. Will be mid week next week maybe before I can get to it.

Mine also has the heat shield wrapping, foil type. Not very effective. Heat shield was resting on the EGR tube. If yours is not touching, you should be fine.

x2 with my 2009 JKUR. nothing touches and i have the foil wrap heat sheilds

For a second I thought I was on the ih8mud forums reading about 80 series land cruisers. Heater hose failure and head gasket issues are a given on those vehicles :koolaid:

I promised a photo. Here it is. This is the new hose. From this angle you cannot really tell, but the new hose and the EGR line are about 3/4" apart. Prior to this they were touching. Look at the foil wrapped heater hose and the now foil wrapped EGR line. Hope this helps.

Jeep is running fine now. No issues, just drove a little over 300 miles.
