What do you guys know about handheld cb's?



Any brands/models i should look for or stay away from?

Take a look at the Cobra75 WXST.

It seems ideal for the space challenged JK Unlimiteds. Don't know what the sound quality is like, (looks like it has a very small speaker) but am thinking of getting one for my 2008 JK Unlimited X.

Would also appreciate any comments, thoughts, suggestions too.

I have the cobra 75. I love it. Loud enough that I can hear it at highway speed w/ windows down/doors off. Posted a video just today of a good CB conversation I had:

I love how everything is on the microphone (all your controls) and you can easily detach it and take it w/ you. Theft being what it is, it's a good thing to be able to remove your CB easily.

for the amount of time i plan on using a cb i don't need that cobra75 cb.

That cb is one bad mamma jamma, but i just want a cheap handheld cb that i can plug into the cigar lighter. I saw a midland for like $50 that appeared to be decent.

If you do go that route keep in mind that it's really hard to fully extend the antenna with the top on. Be sure not to operate it unless the antenna is fully extended.
If the top is off and you want to use it while on the highway, don't be tempted to stick the ant. up, it will snap off.
The good thing about all this is that unless it's an ultra cheap model, it will probably have an external ant jack. Go get a mag mount ant and you'll be much happier with the results.

I had a Cobra handheld and it was ok. I got a mile or a little less of range off road depending on terrain. I kick myself now for it though. I paid near a $100 for it with taxes and all yet my current CB has a much longer range, and cost me somewhere around $60-70 for it all.

That would be OK for short range on the trail, but don't expect it to go full distance. Terrain will greatly effect the range.

The thing with handhelds are that they use you as the ground plane, and humans are not suited for that purpose.

If anything, get one and try it out. Keep all the packing and send it back if it doesn't work out for you.
