I got a 2010 with 513's and ARB Lockers in front and rear. I recently been hearing what sounds like a low speed clanking noise. The noise isn't audible of speeds over 40MPH. It's really noticeable at under 20MPH and I can hear it going slow. At higher speeds, there are no aduible hums from the drivetrain or vibrations. Other than the tire noises, everything seems to be just fine. Four Wheel low works and clanks, four wheel high clanks, and in two wheel drive it clanks at the speeds mentioned above.

It's coming from the front differential. When I stopped it yesterday and put it into park, I could turn the drive shaft a full 45-90 degrees and hear something clank in the front differential. I'll be pulling the differential cover today just to have a peak inside.

I've searched for a few hours while it warms up here, I've seen some mention about pinion bearings being loose or about to fail... Backlash not being set right and it being an issue...

These gears have about 10K on them and never made a single noise.

Can anyone shed some light on what issues may be ahead?

guys the teeth looked perfect. i couldn't rotate it all the way because the tires are on the ground, but from the teeth i saw with the diff open, all looked well on the inside.

lol thanks goody :D

now... what are my options?

1. tackweld the cap on there? I drove 60 miles like that last night to get home... I got a feeling the u joint is toast.

2. replace u-joint all together using Doc's youtube tutorial (btw ty)

3. throw in some new axle shafts...

what other options do I got?

a few questions. could I have damaged anything inside the differential from driving with the cap off like that?

is it safe to drive low speeds to a buddy's garage? one of you local guys will have my rig parked outside soon. :D

The ear is the hole in the shaft where the u-joint is located. If the ears are stretched, the u-joint will not seat correctly in the hole and the shaft will have to be replaced.

im talking about the ears where the U joint sits. if they not wallered out.

thanks guys. sounds like i should take the axle shaft out to have a look before i buy anything then.

ya. i dont wheel that hard at all. not even frequent either. once a month.

perhaps i'll pull the shaft and verify the ears are ok and replace the ujoint. if broken, than i'll go ahead and swap the axle shaft if available. if not then i'll go with rcvs.
