I got a 2010 with 513's and ARB Lockers in front and rear. I recently been hearing what sounds like a low speed clanking noise. The noise isn't audible of speeds over 40MPH. It's really noticeable at under 20MPH and I can hear it going slow. At higher speeds, there are no aduible hums from the drivetrain or vibrations. Other than the tire noises, everything seems to be just fine. Four Wheel low works and clanks, four wheel high clanks, and in two wheel drive it clanks at the speeds mentioned above.

It's coming from the front differential. When I stopped it yesterday and put it into park, I could turn the drive shaft a full 45-90 degrees and hear something clank in the front differential. I'll be pulling the differential cover today just to have a peak inside.

I've searched for a few hours while it warms up here, I've seen some mention about pinion bearings being loose or about to fail... Backlash not being set right and it being an issue...

These gears have about 10K on them and never made a single noise.

Can anyone shed some light on what issues may be ahead?

You should be able to get some rotation out of the pinion by hand, but anything near 90* is sounding like a backlash problem. In and out would be more bearing, unless one is completely destroyed somehow. Definitely pull the cover.

Has to be a pad bearing/too little preload, no? A broken ring/pinion gear would make all kinds of noises at all speeds

A stripped gear could cause that much rotational play in the driveshaft?
Sure it could, it may not be completely "stripped" but if 2-4 teeth are chipped off the pinion, the pinion will rotate that far until a "good" tooth bites the ring gear..

Or there is a horrendous amount of backlash.

certainly a good thing that you found that issue with the driveshaft though before shit gets bad.

guys the teeth looked perfect. i couldn't rotate it all the way because the tires are on the ground, but from the teeth i saw with the diff open, all looked well on the inside.
Regardless, you should not be ale to rotate your driveshaft even half that much
