I would like to take a Jerry can of fuel with me on some of my longer trips, but don't have any way of mounting it on the exterior of my jeep. I would like to find some sort of mounting system to hang it on my spare tire if possible, but any suggestions y'all have would be greatly appreciated! I already have the military style Jerry can, and I would really like to find some way of mounting the can without drilling any holes in my Jeep, if at all possible. I don't want to spend the money on a new rear bumper right now, either. Any ideas? Thanks!

There is a system for mounting the can to the side that doesn't require any drilling and looks pretty well engineered. Can't remember the company that offers it - might be morryde. If you have the stock tire carrier I wouldn't recommend adding the weight of a gas can to it without any reinforcement. There are several options for reinforcing your tailgate/tire carrier that include mounts for jerry cans. You could always go that route and keep your bumper.

Look at daystar products as well. They have a fuel can that fits what you are looking for.

What trips are you needing fuel for?
my Hemi wrangler can do shaver lake-dusy ershim-shaver lake on a tank of fuel, probably 100 miles and 1/3 off road.
last time for that trip I did put a 2 gallon can in the back, but I didn't need it.

last time for that trip I did put a 2 gallon can in the back, but I didn't need it.
Well, If I go out to Johnson Valley, it's a ways to a gas station, and I don't want to stop the fun to run and get more gas. Also, in case anyone else runs out of gas, it would be nice to have the can available.

I didn't really think about the stock tire carrier being up to the task of holding the spare AND 5 gallons of fuel...good point! Thanks for mentioning that! I like the looks of the Morryde side can carriers, but now I need to decide which side to get. Do I mount one on the driver's side, so I can watch it through the tight trails, or get one mounted on the passenger side and just forget that it's even there?? Suggestions? Arguments for and against? Thanks again, guys, for all the great suggestions so far!

I was looking into something like this as well. We have a long stretch of beach over here "national sea shore" and if you aren't careful, you can run out of fuel. There are no roads leading away from the beach once you get so far and you will need to turn around. I think a 5 gallon Jerry van would be perfect for a trip like this.

this is cheap and rides solid. It made it thru the dusy ershim with no problem. cost about $7 for cinch straps and maybe $18 for the gas can if you don't already have one. I cant see spending money on rotopax and other expensive set ups for the few times a year I am going to use them. This has been back and forth from Montana to Californication 2x with no issues.

But what do you have the cinch straps hooked to? we've already established that the stock spare tire carrier isn't up to the task of supporting much more than the spare tire itself, let alone another 30 or so pounds of fuel. I don't want to spend the money replacing my free bumper. Do you have some sort of bracketry attached to the stock hinge points for the rear gate? If so, how much did they cost and where might I find them? Thanks for any info you can provide.
