:pissed:

I cant find a dealer that will turn off my esp for me! I heard you flash your computer turn the wheel left or right, but they said its a liability issue. I think its more of an issue being on an offramp and not being able to turn and drive!

Any suggestions on how to turn it off?

BTW, my steering wheel is as straight as can be (after adjusting)

one wire - one pair of wire cutters....you'll no longer have ABS and BAS or your traction control program for that matter lol and you'll have 3 pretty lights on your dash...but ESP will never bother you again.

The is a TSB with the proceedures to turn it off, just by doing key strokes & whatever else... I believe it's kind of like the seat-belt dinger, locks, & headlight proceedures. I'll do some searching and see if I can find it for you.

Oh, plus the light doesn't come on by doing this!

Here you go.
I guess the light stays on, but at least the esp is off when you start the vehicle...

The thing is to have the key in the on position but not have the motor running. Then do the whole steering wheel to left a half turn, hold the esp button for 7 sec until u hear the ding then turn to the right hold the button, wait for the ding, then center the wheel hold the button, wait for the ding. oh yeah u have to put the jeep in 4 low first before u do anything. Its really hard to turn the wheel with the engine off, but it can be done. I did it. once its done u will have the little squiggly lines in the instrument cluster.

Another thought... get the aev pro-cal(or borrow a buddies) and make sure you steering wheel is truly centered... it could be a full revolution off. Mine used to come on once in a while when making left hand turns... tried the pro-cal and realized it was not centered... centered it up and hasn't done it since!

also, here is the TSB number. Maybe you can ask them about the specific TSB to get them to do it rather then asking directly

Also, if you have already had it done or have a 2008and newer, here is the sequence:

WARNING:With ESP in the permanent disabled mode, the enhanced vehicle stability offered by the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM) systems is unavailable. In an emergency evasive maneuver, the ESP and ERM systems will not engage to assist in maintaining vehicle stability. This disabled mode is intended for off-road use only. Vehicle modifications requiring the owner to configure the vehicle in the ESP disabled mode, will seriously affect the vehicle roadworthiness, safety, and may lead to loss of control and/or accident resulting in serious injury or fatal injuries.

Procedure To Turn ON (or OFF) The Permanent ESP Disable Feature:
a. Verify that the automatic transmission selector is in the “Park” position, and that a manual transmission is in neutral gear.
b. Start the vehicle engine and wait approximately five (5) seconds for the system bulb check to complete.
c. Shift the transfer case into the 4H range position. Firmly set parking brake.
d. Turn the steering wheel until it is centered and the wheels are pointed straight ahead.
e. Turn the steering wheel one-half (½) turn to the right (clockwise). HOLD steering wheel in this position.
f. Press and hold the “ESP OFF” button for 7 seconds. Release the “ESP OFF” button right after 7 seconds. Wait for chime.
g. Turn the steering wheel back to center, then turn the steering wheel one-half (½) turn to the left (counterclockwise). HOLD the steering wheel in this position.
h. Press and hold the “ESP OFF” button for 7 seconds. Release the “ESP OFF” button right after 7 seconds. Wait for chime.
i. Turn the steering wheel back to center.
j. Press and hold the “ESP OFF” button for 7 seconds. Release the “ESP OFF” button right after 7 seconds. Wait for chime.
k. Cycle the ignition switch to the “OFF” position.
2. While the Permanent ESP Disable feature is turned on, the vehicle will display the following:
a. The ESP telltale in the instrument cluster will be illuminated.
b. The vehicle odometer will display a “ESP OFF” message.
To Turn OFF The Permanent ESP Disable Feature:
a. Repeat the above procedure (in Step 1).

Looking at your mod list in your signature I don't see any type of calibrator for the speedo(Like the AEV Procal or similar).

Get a Procal and tell the Jeep what tire size you have. This will fix probably 95% of your problem. The ESP is running off a program that uses wheel speed as one of the factors.

Your tires are turning at a rate different than the computer is expecting to see, which will trigger the ESP too early in corners.

The Procal cured about 90% of my early ESP problems.

The TSB is to allow the esp to be turned off according to the posted steps.
The dealer can not do this for legal and libel reasons. Its just business. Its something you do at your own risk, so YOU have to do it.
Only some of the 07's need to have the tsb flash to allow the full disable of this.
and fwiw, JP's website does have the procedure and explaination well written.

You cannot borrow a ProCal from a buddy, once used it's linked to your VIN.
You can reset it to default, but you loose your config in the Jeep.
and you answered this 2 yr old thread why?

Yeah, I found different info in different threads...
After a "compilation", I found the proper wire to cut... ;) (purple wire with light blue stripe)
I did it this afternoon and put the switch over the left speaker.
Works great and now I can drift properly in the snow in the parking lot... ;)
Also the stupid hard top drain that pours into the Jeep is really stupid.

Ok yeah.
Well I prefer having it disabled "on demand"...
ESP really helps on road when you hit some ice while accelerating, etc...
But with the switch off you can really drift without having to fight with the brakes... ;)

have you had anyproblems since you did the switch? id like to do the same.
no, i love it, and i live in co where it is snowy a lot. It just makes you a better driver. And if the roads are that bad, dont drive so fast. I put in 4wh and drive a comfortable speed.
