The family and I are taking a trip out west again spending a week in Southwestern CO (Durango) (Aug 4th through 11th) and almost a week in Moab (August 11th through 16th) I thought I'd throw this up in case anyone else was planning on being in the area and wanted to hook up to run trails or just meet up. We don't have a set itinerary for the trip so we're relatively open so long as what you're planning on running isn't beyond the abilities of myself or my rig.

Between now and August I'll be throwing up some trails that we're thinking about running. There's are just so many it's hard to decide what to run.

Sounds like fun. What are the capabilities of your rig? Moab can be as easy or difficult as you want it to be.

At the moment I'm sporting a stock Rubicon Unlimited. I'm not sure if I'll have any mod's done by the time of the trip.

This'll be our second trip to Moab, so yeah, I know all how that goes. Our last time out we ran Fins N Things, Hell's Revenge, Elephant Hill, Top of the World, Tower Arch and Gemini Bridge and Bull Canyon in a stock Rubicon Unlimited. I didn't always pick the hardest line, but then when you drove it there and have to drive it back you've got to be smart about how you wheel. This time around we'll have our daughter who'll be 20 months at the time of the trip. So looking to have fun, but not get crazy.

Alright so it's looking like by the time we leave for the trip I'll rolling on 35's with a 3" lift.

As for trails, there's nothing set in stone but we're thinking about Black Bear and maybe Governors Basin one day (already ran Imogene a few years ago) and Animas Forks, California Gulch, Hurricane Pass and Corkscrew Gulch another day. I'm on also debating whether we want to hit Engineer Pass on our way to Durango after stopping by our property in around Colorado City though that's up in the air as we'll be fully loaded with gear.

The same goes for Moab. We're thinking about hitting Poison Spider Mesa, though not sure if we want to tackle the triple threat (we'll have a 20 month old that'll get cranky sitting for extended periods of time).

We've got a fair amount of things that we're considering doing in these areas but if anyone has any suggestions they want to share feel free whether it be an activity or a restaurant to check out.

I would highly recommend Engineer Pass as it is pretty easy but very scenic. Its a long haul, especially on the east side - long dirt road from the trailhead to town.

As for Moab, I would NOT do the trifecta with a 20 month old, unless you make plans to potentially spend the night out there. Its a 10 hour run if you keep moving. Stop and linger at various points, and add to that. Its a trail best not run alone either. It will find any weakness in your rig and expose it. I have used my tools more on that trail than any other.

I would recommend the following approach. Do Poison Spider until the intersection with Golden Spike. Turn left onto Golden Spike and take that out to the Launch Pad, about 20 minutes or so. Do the Launch Pad, make a left off the top of the fin that Launch Pad puts you on and circle back to the trail. Take Golden Spike back to Poison Spider and make a left at the intersection and follow Posion Spider around the loop. A GPS with the trail on it comes in really handy as the trail can get hard to follow in a few places, especially by that time of year when the trial markings are gone from EJS. PS is a fun trail with plenty of challenges. Enjoy!!

Good to know, I don't think the wife would be too happy with me pulling that long of a day.

I'll likely have two GPS's going along with the fun treks books for CO and Moab so I hopefully will be good there. :) If all goes well we'll be able to hook up with people to run trails with while we're in Moab and CO.

If you want to make the Moab trails foolproof, pick up Funtreks Moab data card for your GPS. (Check GPS compatability on their website.) Or there is a smart phone app, every trail, which is also published by funtreks. I prefer the data card as it has more detail.

You won't need to hook up with anyone in CO to do those trails. There is nothing on them that will give you any trouble.

Enjoy!!

Agreed, I just got back from my Colorado and Moab trip. Yes, my Funtrek card did not work with my GPS. It one of those questionable ones they showed on line. That part sucked.

The Colorado are very scenic. I loved them. I also drove my rig out there from SC and back on 3.5" lift and 37's. the only part that really sucked was Kansas/Missouri. Those two states seemed like two thirds of the trip! They also just seemed like one state.

Back on topic. You are going at a great time. Snow will be gone for the most part opening up a lot more trails. I ran into snow drifts had to turn around numerous times. One place was not meant to be turned around at and reverse was also sketchy!
Edit: just in front on the Jeep is where I had to turn around. Climbed the wall to do it.

Enjoy! I love the state of Colorado. I might just move to Basalt I loved it so much.

I hear ya, probably almost as bad western IL, IA, and NE on I-80, an hour in and you want to stab yourself with an ice pick. We've tried mixing it up on our road trips jumping off the interstate onto major highways for a chance to see that part of the country you miss blasting along at 70 or 80 mph.

This will be our third time hitting trails in that region so we have a rough idea what we're in for. Luckily we've not encountered snow, though two years we attempted Yankee Boy Basin in the rain in our WK2 and had to abort about 1000ft from the top trail. :suicide: I know don't need to run trails with anyone, but it can be more fun when you have others to jibber jabber with along the way. :)

Counting down the days, only about 34 more days 'til we leave and I still have a ton to do to the Jeep. :suicide:

I hit snow on every trail I went on! The pic shown was near Crystal Mill. I don't remember the trail name though. If we were to keep going, we would have been able to make it to Crested Butte. Shofield Pass maybe. I don't remember exactly except it was near or in Marble I believe.

Getting closer, only two more weeks 'til we're on the to Colorado and Moab.

If you're going to be in either area while we're out there and want to run trails or anything hit me up.

Yeah I'd like to run Engineers Pass as well but not sure if time will permit it or not on the way from Colorado City to Durango on the 4th. Any other trails we're pretty open between the 6th and the 10th since we don't have a set itinerary for the trip.

I will be in Durango arriving the 4th and leaving the 7th. Would like to hook up as well. Looking at the Alpine loop area. Let me know what trails you are planning.

As I'm trying to plan things out it's looking like we've got four days open with no set plans at the moment (6,7,8 & 9). As we draw closer we may potentially lose one of those days when we schedule the train ride.

Right now I'm thinking maybe the 6th or 7th for running Black Bear, weather permitting. After running Black Bear I figure I'll have to give the wife a break from wheeling for a day or two before running a loop out to include Animas Forks, California Gulch, Hurricane Pass and Corkscrew Gulch.

Traildamage.com has a good list or trails in both Colorado and Moab.

My suggestion if you're running trails in either place, pick up the fun treks books. A great resource when on the trail away from the net.
