I got a CEL this morning, ran the codes and got a P0420 which from what I've read means I'm probably going to need new catalytic converters or possibly O2 sensors. I have 76,6XX miles on it and read about the 8 year/80k mile EPA exhaust warranty so I'm hoping whatever it is will be covered.

So...my question is related to the resonator. I bashed mine pretty good on a rock and it's dented/scratched. This happened a while back and never threw any codes or issues so I figured it was ok and from what I understand it's just a sound dampener. Is it possible that the resonator is the cause of the CEL and code? Anyone ever had that issue?

As long as it isn't smashed enought to cause restriction to exhaust flow, it likely isn't causing your issue.

If the catalytic converter itself takes a hard knock it can damage the internal structure.
