So. I want to build some axles for the JK. Trying to decide if I want to keep the rear and build a 44 for the front. Or build another set of 1 tons.

I have a good 60 housing but it is just the center section. I would need to re-tube and everything. I've narrowed a 60 before for my XJ so I don't think re-tubing would be to bad. If I go with the 60 I will also build another 14b for the rear. The last one I built was fun. Used Ballistics shave kit and it came out real nice. I'm just not sure I NEED another set of tons... :shitstorm:

I also have access to a HP44 that I could build up. Late 70's I believe. This would probably be the less costly option...

I don't see myself ever going bigger than 37's. At least not for a few years until I get other things in order. So given all that, what do you think I should do?

Hahaha! Not a bad pitch! If I had the coin right now... So why are you selling them? :gluging: Are you in a hurry to unload them?

Ok ok bottom dollar $2750.... Maybe $2500 if you pick them up by this weekend... Lol.
Sold the Jeep, getting ready to move back to Up-state NY... Don't want to lug that heavy shit around... Though, my plans are to build a 4 door CJ7 and Was going to use these on that project but, talking to my old man he convinced me to us the frame/driveline from the rusted out Late 78 F250... Yes, she has the HP D60's. Farmer who had it before me put a 460 in it... 435/205... So the money I get for the shit I'm selling will go towards "beefing up" the 460 and getting the other major parts to make a CJ 4 door.

Haha. If I could, I would consider taking the axles off your hands. I regret selling my last set of tons. Sounds like you got a good deal lined up though. I'll keep my eye on your FS thread. Never know will happen. When's the move?

Does that number drop as the move gets closer?

Lol. Do I get a cut if you sell them in my thread? :th_pray:
What's the distance WMS to WMS on the front? I assume the rear is 67".

So doesn't anyone else have thoughts on what I should do?
Totally hijacked... LOL the price should drop but dragging all of that shit up there offsets everything . I definitely think the buyer, especially one from your thread should give you 30% of sale price. Front is 67" rear is 65" I WAS going to run 1" spacers in the rear.

I say build the late 70's d44... Tube is what, 1/2" wall? I had a late 70's hd d44... Think it was from a Ford highboy... Came with a d60 rear... Both were 8 lug. small u-joints if I remember correctly.

The more I think about it, I am leaning towards the 60 front. I think the task of re-tubing it will be a rewarding challenge. And maybe do a 70 rear. I'm in no real rush so it should be fun. Maybe I can finish before EJS next year. That would be a fun trip.

I just finished building a '79 D60 front and 14-Bolt rear with 5.13s for our JK, but when it came down to it, to go on trails that would justify tons and 40s I'd be pretty much guaranteed body damage... so I picked up an old Bronco and I'm throwing the tons under that for a true trail beater.

That leaves me with a D30 front under the JK, which is likely to get 37s soon... and I'm ready to lock the front end, so the 30 needs to go. Rubicon front axles are well into $1k or more if they're bone stock, but then they need gussets and truss to even joke about putting anything bigger than 33s, so that's even more money.

I grabbed a high pinion D44 with the welded wedges. Going to shave off the wedges, add all the suspension brackets, regear it and the rear to 4.56 or 4.88, and weld the spider gears. New steering, bearings, U-joints, and ball joints, and it'll be as good as new for less than the cost of a Rubicon D44. Then just swap the chromo rear shafts to a 5x5.5 pattern and it's good to go.

If you build the 60 front you need a one ton rear. Then you have all that extra center housing hanging, not to mention housing clearance for oil pan and steering. For the JK, we won't be going over 37s, so a high pinion D44 front will be more than sufficient.

Just my $.02... some times less is more. Know where you want the rig to be. "Just going ahead with the 60" is going to wind up costing WAY more than you want to invest and having done it before... deep down... you know it's true.

Keep it reasonable with the D44 and enjoy the simplicity.

The voice of reason! You are absolutely correct on the costing way more. I spent a ton of cabbage on the last 60 build. This one would easily add a few hundred just in the DOM to re-tube it. Would still have to get inners and outers... Maybe I will just sell the 60 housing and put the money towards the 44. That and save the money I would spend building a 1 ton rear... You might be my "soon to be wife's" new best friend! I get married next month. :suicide:

Well congratulations! I think... :bounce:

Either way, yes... if you're not going heavy with it, the old Ford high pinion 44 is going to be plenty for you- especially if you can swing a set of chromoly axles.

If there's anything we can do to help with the build, just let me know; we have access to Ruff Stuff, Ballistic, ARTEC... you name it! I'm actually on my way to the junk yard now- I got word there's another HP-D44 with welded wedges that just hit the lot. Can't let it go to the crusher; never know when you'll need one!

The voice of reason sucks... It's stops us from our natural/basic human instincts of wanting more of what we don't need, and in doing so, it creates a sanctuary for cradling/nurturing our primitive Jeep needs. With that said, the 44 will hold you over for a while, but, in the back of your head your subconscious will be fighting the good fight convincing you to build the 1-tons! LOL.
Buy mine & sell everything else... You'll end up with 1-tons for under a $1k :thefinger:
As for building the D60... The 3-1/8" x 1/2" DOM will cost a pretty chunk, you already have the center section, find a D50/51? ... Hell, most people practically give those away for next to nothing... Take the outers as they're the same as a D60... Cheap solution. Craigslist or eBay or amazon prime to find the rest for pennies.
Side thought: I've seen a lot people dump money into the 44's to make them stronger and at the end of it, the 44 was still a 44.

Just found out that my 44 I thought I had tucked away at a buddies place was junked by another guy that works there... Apparently it's cool to toss things to the scrap guy without asking who they belong too... Wonder how much the scrap guy gave him.. :flipoff:
