I still don't understand how the Megaupload guy got in trouble...he created a file sharing service...how can he be responsible for the people misusing it? I thought the difference was Napster was advertised and used solely as music sharing software...This has nothing to do with SOPA and PIPA. In fact, this demonstrates exactly why SOPA and PIPA were both superfluous and exceptionally dangerous. As the government showed with shutting down Megaupload, they already had the powers that they claimed SOPA and PIPA were going to give them. What more did they really need?
But SOPA and PIPA were written far more broadly and with too much vague language, and the potential for serious abuse was huge. It was legislation for the internet written by people who barely understand e-mail, and lobbied by the same people who said the VCR was going to end their industry.
