So I have a 2014 JKUR and recently the blend door actuator responsible for selecting cold/hot air started making a ratcheting sound. After doing many searches on various forums, it didn't seem like anyone had done it on their own. And the online ChiltonDIY manual makes it sound like the whole dash needs to be pulled. And for someone not wanting to go down that round I began digging into the dash and found it was actually easier than expected.

First, popping the access panel under the steering column gives you access and a view.

On the right edge, remove the cabin air temp sensor using a Phillips screwdrivers.

Remove the metal panel thats held on by two 10mm screws.

Removing the outer side of the floor vent was pretty simply done by giving it a little squeeze to release the tabs. Then wiggle it out of the way.

I then removed the two 8mm holding a control module thats in the way.

Once it's moved out of the way you have a straight shot to the two Phillips screws that hold down the actuator.

After wiggling it out, I compared it to its replacement





I noticed that there is a little line molding into the actuator, and the arm is about 90 degrees off of that. I'd recommend marking the arm and actuator before lifting the arm off to keep a solid reference as to how it should be on the replacement.

After reinstalling everything, I ran the car up and cycled the temp knob to hot and cold giving it 30 seconds at each end. Everything checked out fine, so it was a lot simpler than I originally expected and I hope this helps anyone running into the same issue.

I just did this a few days ago. I had the same clicking sound when opening the door or starting the jeep. I started to remove the dash then quickly found out the cage would have to be removed so decided to look at going through the steering wheel panel like you did and managed to get it replaced. I have a feeling as these get older this will be more common. I was looking as well for any writeups but didn't find any so good job in adding this! I would have added one but was short on time since I was trying to do it while the kids were napping. I found one of my gear on the actuator had broken teeth.

jeep sahara 2015 no heat at all

I can not thank you enough for this post. I been watching every video, read every forum and no one had the same valuable info when it comes to recent models of jeep jku driver side blend door problems. I went to a dealer which quoted me for 750 dollars and a family member who Owens a shop told me, we will have to take the hall dash off. And supposedly it is a 5 to 6 hours labor job.

I did follow literally the steps you mentioned and booyaaaa problem solved. To give you insight of the problem I had, I owe a 2015 jeep wrangler sahara. there was no heat coming out both side of the vents. I changed the thermostat, washed/flashed the heat core, flashed the radiator and changed passenger side actuator as well. Finally
took off the panel off under the steering wheel
Took the metal panel (8 mm I think)
Took the supporting pillar metal piece of
Removed the box behind (it might be the controlling device, I am not sure)
I squeezed and wiggled around the floor duct to remove it
There I had the access for the actuator. (2 screws and unplug the power cord)
Replaced and work like the old days

so thank you again. thank you for saving me half of my mortgage payment.
