Bent Tierod

Absolutely hammered the tierod last time out on the Rubicon. Bent the tierod which in turn caused the steering stabilizer bracket to puncture the stabilizer also causing the shaft end of the stabilizer to rub on the track bar as the tierod rotated backward. Also the pin that held the swaybar link to the axle bracket drivers side is gone. Second time this has happened. The thing is that it tracks straight down the road. I drove almost 200 miles from the trail to home. Let go of the steering wheel and it tracks right down the middle. I did a simple measurement between the front and back of the front tires and it shows 1/4" toe in. I don't drive it enough to notice any unusal tire wear.Should I leave it as is until the tierod bends some more? I don't want to replace it right away if I can get away with this for a little while. I'm going to lose the stabilizer though. The RE relocate bracket doesn't work for me. I have so much flex in front it just gets in the way.

Don't know why the images are so big. Can anyone tell me how to resize?

Geez...My mouse slid all the way off my desk trying to look at this post! I think if you are not going to spend some money right now on a stronger tierod and relocating the draglink and a new track bar with relocated mounts (front & rear), then I would leave it alone. Maybe check the toe again. It should have a little toe but I don't think that much is correct...Not sure. Maybe I am wrong about this, but I have certainly been around this problem before and could not seem to get it right without going back to the stock stabilizer mount. My problem also related to a relocated (hi steer) draglink and dropped track bar brackets...essentially trying to get everything to work together.
Dr Dirty,

I saw your setup on a different thread. I tried looking up Rock Krawler and couldn't find anything related to a tierod. Can you provide a link?
its on there website under suspension build componets rigth by the drag link

Chromedome,

Looking at your avatar, I know that spot on " The Con" .
Is it just me or is that tie rod bent in this pic? It doesn't look anywhere near as straight as it does in your freshly installed pic above.
that was the 4th stock one they are all in the junk pile on the side of the shop now hahahah

I'm going to get that Tie Rod - if i bend it or break it they'll replace it. I bent the crap out of my stock tie rod a few weeks ago. I bent it back in shape for now....well, kinda
Dr Dirty needs to confirm this as I am unsure, but I believe that it is not complete. I was under the assumption that you will also need to purchase 2 Chevy 3/4 ton tie rod ends as well. I believe that the knuckles will also have to be reamed/ re-drilled. I do know from picking this thing up that it is as bombproof as a tie rod can be. The thing is so heavy, it's not even funny.
I have this set up and smacked the heck out of it on a few occasions, I have no expierence with the Rock Kralwer set up. Worth a look.

nope no reaming involved if you use the moog tie rod ends that they suggest wich were rather expensive like 60 bucks each then its a bolt in deal and they are supposed to be releasing the high steer kit wich reuses there tierod and drag link si the upgrade should be inexpensive

so the Moog tie rod ends don't require reaming but the other ones do?
I know that if you get the Chevy 3/4ton ends that they need to be reamed- but I guesss like the doctor says...no need to if using the Moogs. FWIW- When I was looking at doing this set-up, Napa had quoted me around $75 each (!) for the 3/4 ton units.

At that point, the 4340 chromoly (fully adjustable without removing...) Poly Performance tie rod started looking pretty good. Plus the rod ends were included.
sounds like the polyperformance setup is only 25 bucks more...i wonder how strong it is tho. I really like the piece of mind that if i get the rock krawler tie rod that it will be the last tie rod I will ever have to buy.
Based on personal experience, I imagine Poly would take care of you just as well as Rock Krawler.
