.... if you're relying on your 40s to get you through, rather than your driving ability, you too are part of the problem.
So youre saying that tire size dont matter aye? Walker Evans on 4 space saver spare tires can go more places than desert dog on 40s? If you answer no, then your above statement is poo poo.

i agree with most of what op is saying..in my case there is a pile of parts on my desk waiting to be installed before i move to 35's...but the tire carrier isnt on the list...ive found offroad the jeep feel better with a "heavy" wheel and tire in the back the cab...that weight is in the wrong place on a tire carrier..but thats just my opinion:smokin:
Why would you want it in the cab? It's positioned perfectly on the carrier.

That's very debatable. Many people will tell you it is better to have the weight over the axle rather than hanging off the back of the Jeep.

Here's an example of the type of advice I was referencing....

The op asked what lift he should get to install some 35's he has on a '07 he just bought....

Granted the op's question is pretty vague but the advice is even worse. Not trying to call anyone out, but to me it's a good example.
My guess is that the advice you quoted was given by someone who is relatively new to this forum. If I am seeking advise on anything, I always looks for people with a high post count or a sponsor to really take their advice into consideration.

Probably was.... but we won't know since he didn't provide a real link.

Pleeease don't let post count alone guide your decision to trust advice:laughing:

Thank you captain obvious:p my point exactly. I don't give advice unless it's a subject I know which is mostly general mechanical stuff....... or I can sometimes point you to a thread where "x" has been discussed already.
Oh, youre welcome. I am very well known for and very good at pointing out the obvious.

EDIT: No, no im not very well know for it or anything else.

Debate it all you want, with the tire on the carrier it puts more downforce on the rear axle. Something about leverage...
Having the tire closer to the center of the vehicle (like on the cargo are floor above the rear axle) make it so that there is less severe of a weight transfer since the weight is closer to the center of the vehicle. The weight of the tire itself is still the same, as you said, it has more leverage on the carrier BUT, that's not always a good thing-

Sports car example: remember the old rear engine Porsches and their terrible handling? Most of the weight of the car was at the back and behind the rear axle so the weight transfer in cornering made for an "interesting" experience. Compare that to a mid engine car of the same era, about the same weight, similar percentage of its weight riding on the rear axle BUT, the weight shift in cornering is not as severe so the handling is more neutral.

Also, the tire will be down lower on the cargo floor than on the carrier so it is not contributing as much to having a high center of gravity.

Having said all that, I will still be carrying mine on the carrier, I have stuff I want to carry in the cargo area!!!

Anyways, I am a Jeep noob so, hope y'all don't mind question:
What is the steering box upgrade that is spoken of by the OP? I have yet to come across that! Thanks!

Unfortunately everyone has an opinion, it will vary drastically when you get enough like knuckle-heads around bench building. The "I did it, you should too" opinion seems to get tossed around pretty often I feel. But as with anything on the internet, everything you read is just another tool you need to use to get what you want. A ratchet is not a hammer (despite popular belief), you still are responsible for the modifications you make, and the money you spend on it. Opinions are nice, but facts and understanding exactly what you are doing is always better.

For instance,

My recent debate is what gear ratio would work best for ME if I go with 37s. I have a 6spd 2dr, I can't count how many "go with 5.xx gears" suggestions I've got. Based on the "everyone runs those" and the "thats what I bought" theories. I got tons of suggestions (from here and locally) from automatic guys, that information is 110% USELESS due to the gear ratio differences. I've had people tell me how much better their Jeep crawls...well, compared to what? A X/Sahara transfer case, or a 4:1 Rubicon case like mine? 3.21s/2.72case and 37s, or 4.10s/4:1 case and 35s...MAJOR differences. It's up to whoever is spending the money to decipher what information they are receiving to make the best choice. Cruise rpm and driveshaft speed seems to be another big factor. The several transfer cases that have grenaded had steep gears, 5.xx and high speeds in common (from what I've seen). I drive at pretty good highway rates, 70 is the minimum, I maintain 80+ pretty consistently. I don't want it spinning 3100rpm at 80mph and those driveshafts hitting warp speed because "this guy" ran the same gearing. Moral to the story, it's a clusterfuck of information, figure out what you are looking for, crunch the numbers, go for rides in other peoples Jeep, do the leg-work!

As far as things bad information, I personally am somewhat surprised on the lack of aftermarket "sport cages" people have in their JK. Thats just something that really doesn't settle well with me when it comes to decent rock crawling or even just running a lifted rig at highway speeds. These JKs look pretty miserable under any roll, but it seems to be a very overlooked topic in the majority of modified JK owners.
