auto vs. manual?

I don't have a modded JK. Or even a JK. Yet.
But I want to know what you think about the different trannies after you've dumped the stock tires for the larger ones. I know some have changed diff gearing to compensate, but what about the overall performance of just the tranny being considered? I'm old school - should I really consider the auto?

Thanks for helping...:(

As many have said before, a lot of the decision between a stick and an automatic is personal preference. That said, for me, the automatic is very nice for off road use. If you're planning on doing tough trails, particularly rocky trails, I think the automatic is much easier to drive. If you have to stop the vehicle while you're perched up on some rocks trying to figure out your line, it's a lot easier with an automatic. With a stick, you might have to kill the engine. With the low gears we run, you can always restart it in gear and continue on, but I still think it's a lot easier with an automatic. Of course, others have the opposite opinion.

I think automatics are also a little easier on the drivetrain than a stick. Regardless of your choice, you will probably want to change your gear ratios if you run tires that are somewhat larger than stock. Low gears will make a huge difference in your 4 wheeling experience.

If you aren't planning on heavy duty off roading, probably either transmission will work fine for you.

I'm sticking to my automatic.:thefinger:
after offroading several vehicles, in many different terrains, Automatic all the way. I mostly wheeled manuals.

It's SOO MUCH fun losing all of your momentum on a hill climb, sand, mud and so on by either switching gears or having to stay in one (hopefully wisely chosen) gear.

I love manuals, but that's my only complaint about my JK. I wish, for offroading, that I had chosen a auto. Other than the fact that it's one of the sole reasons I managed to get it supercharged by magnuson. Other than that, I often wish I had an auto.

And my wife would drive it if it were an auto which also bums me out. She loves Jeepin' but lacks confidence with the manual and never drives it on or offroad.
Me thinks someone is a tad bored today. :thefinger:

When I do it over again I'll definitely go auto. I love the stick on the streets and day to day driving it's peppy but with the new engine I'd just go ahead and go with the auto, throw some 456's and 37's and be done with it.

I would also go ahead and just do the rubicon up front and build up the d44 and all that is wrapped up in the payment. My plan was to buy a second hand d44 and have had zero luck. Now it's do a 60/14b or 5 grand on a aftermarket JK axle.

I love the manual myself. I live in the central Sierras (Yosemite) and I have a lot of great wheeling roads right out of my back door (literally). I prefer the manual because of the use of the clutch. I hardly ever use it on the trail, but if I need it, it's there. Otherwise, if Im going up something that is too steep and rocky, I just throw it in four low. That's what its there for, might as well use it.
Old thread, but constant question.
Auto all day every day for me personally.
Manual street. Offroad... sometimes, I wish I had an auto. It is nice to have a clutch to feather when crawling, though

I'm 100% manual. I realize an auto would be easier to wheel, but for the wheeling that is around here (woods trails, not boulder fields) a manual is awesome. I can throw it in first and low and idle up climbs, plus, I can pick my way down hills the same way. And if I get myself in over my head on a climb (picking a front tire too high) I have an abort switch (the clutch) haha. Plus it is more enjoyable for me. I get bored driving an auto on the roads. I think this Jeep will stay manual, and my next one will certainly be a stick too.

Yes, but at the same time it sucks when your wife knows how to drive a stick and constantly steals it, and enjoys it, when you are away and can't.
