There are really nice images in this thread! As far as equipment goes, I am also using a Canon SX series P/S with manual controls which I use a lot now. I still can't justify the need for a DSLR (yet) but in general you can't go wrong with Canon and their image processors/optics. I've yielded excellent images with my lowly Canon. At the end of the day, it's perspective and framing that makes or breaks a great shot.

There is nothing wrong with a good quality point-and-shoot - but after making the jump back in to DSLR photography 2 years ago I have to say that you get so much more control and potential with a DSLR. I studied photography in college and shot SLRs back in the 80's. I have really enjoyed getting back to basics with my camera, making it do exactly what you want.

Even so - the best camera in the world is the one you have with you
