I'm glad this thread is seeing some life. I love what other people can do with cameras! We are still learning. Took some yesterday down in Waikiki and they were terribly noisy. Found out that little "Auto" setting isn't always the best. It maxed out the ISO when it really shouldn't have. We'll get there, though.

Here IS one that turned out well. Sunset from Hale'iwa on the north shore toward Ka'ena Point.

Yeah, I try to shoot everything in as low of an ISO setting as possible, which for me is usually ISO 100. And I never use "Auto" anymore. Try using a tripod and remote for longer exposure pics in low light conditions. Only drawback is if it's windy. I took some 30+ second exposures in Cancun last summer and they looked pretty decent, with the exception that is was slightly windy and the palm trees were moving, which produced some blue in the images. THe pics were plenty bright though, even though is was about 11:30 P.M. when I snapped them.

Actually....here are a couple I snapped on that trip, including the one I mentioned. All of these were shot late at night w/o flash/strobes using a trip and wireless remote. The last one is actually my first HDR that turned out decent. It's a combination of 6 different exposures shot at +/- 1/2 increments. And it was shot at about 1:00 A.M.

I guess there is a balance between lower ISO settings and shutter speed. I am taking a SCUBA class and my wife was taking pictures during the pool sessions. The first night, she forgot to adjust the ISO and some of the pics were very noisy. The second night, I reminded her, but if she set it too low, it required a slower shutter speed (at least that's her description). Whatever the case, pics from night 2 were clearer than night 1, but only marginally. I'm trying to encourage her to take a free "Intro to Photography" class a dude I work with is giving. Taking pictures is his job, so he knows the stuff. We'll see how things look on the other side of that class.

And Jonathan, very cool pics. It'll be nice to develop to, eh, about half that. :)

EDIT: Links broke, so carry on.

Couple of my super-amateur shots from my vacation. I've had my SLR for about two months and use full manual, except for a little help in the ISO area. As for that I set it to auto 100-400 ISO, if I can't get a decent exposure with that, I'll manually bump it up. I seem to get clearer shots versus it being set to auto ISO 1600 where it'd just keep compensating for me trying to get a faster shutter.

Polarizing filter was sure handy here

My Niece and Nephew, I'm pretty impressed by how decently sharp this one came out for just a basic kit lens.

So I started scuba diving and, naturally, started taking pictures under water. Here are the best of the latest taken at the Sea Tiger (intentionally placed wreck off Waikiki).

This is an egg sack from the Spanish Dancer Nudibranch. Very cool.

A descent size frog fish. He tried to smile for the camera, but, alas, he is genetically doomed to an eternal frown. :)

This little milletseed butterfly fish swam along with me for about 10' or so.

Here is a trumpet fish.

Lastly, a snowflake moray eel. Very pretty little dude! haha Unfortunately, I was the last in the group to get to him, and everyone had kicked up all kinda of sediment. :frown: This wasn't taken at the Sea Tiger, it was taken near the end of Kewalo Pipe.

I'm just beginning. I've always kept a cheap point-n-click digital with me for stuff I wanted to photo. Graduated up to a Canon T2i DSLR to try to get better pics.
right now, I'm letting the camera do most of the work. Need to learn all the bells and whistles on it.

Here's a derelict building I've been passing on my way home from work. For some reason, these things fascinate me.

And the obligatory pet stuff:

Got some great shots, goody! That one of the turtles using the polarizing filter is damn near perfect! Looks like you're catching on quite well. Faster than me for sure. And I've had my DSLR for almost 3 years now. But they say you are your own worst critic, so....

All of my recent pics have been taken with my phone, as I'm currently in need of a charger for my DSLR. Left it on my Duster cover just before leaving for the state fair back in October and forgot it was there. No telling where it fell off along the way. :frown:

Thanks! The polarizer really did a number on that clear water. I could turn it and practically see right through it on the right spot.

Try amazon for your charger, I picked up a spare battery for my DSLR for $10 w/2-day shipping! (works fine, haven't worn it out..just a backup if I needed one on the trip).

Yeah....I love mine. I probably need to get another one, though, to go on my zoom lens. Kinda sucks having to switch between lenses.

So are you back now?

Maybe a little better on the turtles pic. The one with the Mexican chicken seemed better in the original version. Seems more natural, although, the 2nd one looks like you may have sharpened it up a bit. Coloring was better in the first one, though.
