Hummer rims or HMMWV wheels, recentered and modified BY YOU.

The reason I posted this thread is mainly to get you guys out and build shat. :thefinger: like everything I show, I have done it myself, in my garage, with nothing special. I am not a pro fabricator, I am just some cheap bastard who wants kick arse things
But enough with that.

I picked up a set of HMMWV rims off craigslist, you can also get them from an assortment of vendors on pirate 4x4 and possibly here. Picked up a set of pressed centers in 5 on 5 from MAD MAC off pirate, flat beadlock inserts from 406 YJ (pirate) and some rock rings from Great Lakes off-road (pirate), then went to work.
I cut out the old centers with the plasma at work but could easily done on a lathe or even with a jig-saw.
The new centers were dropped in the back and I used a strait edge off the rear rim lip to make sure it was centric. I just used a set of calipers and took multiple measurements. Luckily I wanted as MUCH backspacing as the pressed centers could give, that turned to be about 3.25", so I did not need to make a jig or anything to hold them at that backspacing.
Ran a few small tack welds and measured again...and again...and again  I was building wheels mind you..I figured it was important to measure.

And then ran some 2" stitch welds, and then more. If you look at the back of a factory steel wheel you can get a guess of how much welding is needed.

Then I welded the rings on the outer shell, painted and assembled everything.
sorry no pics because they would be boring.

I tossed them on the axle and checked the runout

My runout was .02 and I was worried..once again "wheels"..they hold tires..they do not like coming off at 70mph (Alex) so I was being anal..

Till I found out the allowed runout for steel wheels is like .120!!

So the tires got mounted and here we go

Anyone see a theme here

so the point of this thread is:
1) Pimp my new sweetness
2) get you guys to build something, seeing as I can build wheels in my garage, that means you can build a tire rack or something
3) pictures of 37's on hummer rims with a 5.5" Rock Krawler long arm.
4) pimping my pimpness :grinpimp:

any questions?

Incredible craftsmanship, mad props! Would love to get my hands on a decent TIG setup.

TIG? thats flux core b!tches :thefinger:

I find it gets the penetration I need and allows me to weld in the driveway no matter the weather. Ya I have to chip slag and do a double pass for thick stuff but it works and does it well.

I have a TIG at work but it is having issues, so I have to wait till they fix it.

Heck, I learned to weld stick before anything else. It teaches you to weld, I swear some people just use a MIG to "glue steel"

*Gag* Oh! This is just gross Doc! I can't believe you actually did something like this! I think I'm going to be sick... :D:D:D

Heh heh heh... J/K, you've impressed me yet again bro! Good job! I really have to learn how to weld when I get back. I can't wait to actually see your rig in person; It's looking really badass!

Oh! And :thefinger: for building this while I'm over here without something of my own to play with! Hahaha...

Cool, I'm getting back to makin my own chit I got away from it a few years ago when we moved. So what did this cost you?
this is by each:
rim $25
rock ring $20-25
center $55
insert $40

So around lets say $145 a wheel for a double bead locked, pretty much un-killable setup. 406 YJ is selling already done ones for I think around $225 but DIY you can take that hundred saved and buy some like new mil Goodyear MTR's from him and now you are on 37's
Just depends on your skill level.

 Had humble beginnings here too, Navy Diving school/nuclear/high pressure welding school took us through the all of it. We actually had to learn to braze steel (old school), literally laying beads with a torch (PIA), then stick weldikng, starting with of course 6011 and moving up to the nice 7018, 9018, etc, then MIG, TIG, plastic and underwater. My fav was TIG though, from the finest high pressure jobs to heavy duty stuff it was the most challenging and versatile. I just wish we would have had the portable plasma cutters back in the Navy.

Funnest MIG job I ever did was aboard our ship in 23' swells south of a hurricane, sun shining, heading back from a 6 month Med cruise. Our 3rd level superstructure outer shell amidship was cracking from stress between the radar guided 76mm cannon and the the PHALANX (R2D2), that was a bit stressful but fun nonetheless.

I have to say, when i read, hummer wheels on a jeep, i thought, "Thats just stupid...." Then when i saw the picture, i changed my mind. That looks bad ass. Is there some kind of "fancified" paint job on the outer rings or just the picture?

if you read my review in the review section of the Rock Crawler suspension I installed you will see the pattern on the links as well. its a skull/zombie fade and on the rims just a body color matched ones.

Looks great. Have you had any trouble with them at speed? At .020 runout I would imagine not.
I have only gotten up to 70 (need to re-gear  ) with zero issues other then the fact they are heavy so accel/brake is changed a little.
But the weight is a trade off for them being easily repairable and double locked.

Doc- Great work--- looks awesome!

I have the tires and wheels- I am going to get some parts from Todd (406YJ) and do up a set or 2.

Thanks for the pics- your JK build is lookin' good!
a set or 2? :thefinger:

I just dropped off 10 outers this afternoon at the Laser cutting shop. Ordered all the parts from 406YJ.

Thanks for the nudge to get me going!;)
