Hi guys. I am pretty new to the Jeep thing. I have small tires that my jeep came with and I am about to buy my friends 33'' MTR Kevlar tires which need a 15 inch wheel. Are there any downsides to putting a 15 inch wheel on a jk? Should I go with 3.75 BS?

Downside: Tight on the brake rotors. They work but they are very close. You can't get bigger brake rotors. You have to tell the guys who balance your wheels not to stack sticky weights on the back of your wheels. Tight on tie rods but not sure you are looking to get crazy off road.
Limited choices of tires as you go with bigger and bigger tires. 33 or 35 okay

Upside: Much cheaper tires every time you get tires.

I have 3.75BS and works well. I have run 33 and 35's without a problem.

do it. depending on the rim you may have to do alittle grinding on the brake rotor so the wheel doesnt rub.

Thanks for the help! Can you tell me what kind of wheels you have on your new jeep? I love those :)
I got both sets from Discount Tire. Procomp 8179 15x8, 5x5 bolt pattern, 3.75 BS. Their computer will say these don't fit your Jeep. I found them online for $100 each and they price matched them.

I run both sets, 33 & 35 on 15s, one is 3.75 BS, another is 4.0. All good. I love the added sidewall you get off road on my 35s, and love the illusion of a big tire on road with my 33s.

I'm thinking about the same thing. I think 35s and 15" make the wheel look really small. 33s and 15 as long as you go with a black wheel looks ok. I still don't know if I want to go with 15 or 17. What are the advantages and disadvantages with 15 over 17?
This is my DD and don't take it off road.

there is a chart floating around here somewhere that tells you if you will. i have no idea where it is though. or you can do what i did. put them on if they touch the rotor take them back off and grind away. repeat process till no more grinding. :)

If you NEVER take it off road, you don't care about the big advantage that the added sidewall gives when on the rocks with 15" setup. So you're basically shopping based on looks and price only. Both personal preferences.

I didn't grind my calipers, instead, I put the steel rims on and drove. The one rim that was slightly rubbing, stopped doing so by the end of the driveway :D.

I think I still want to go with the 15in. wheels but i'm not sure about the tires. I drive a lot on the road for school, but I want to be able to go off road and i want something that i can take mudding. I read that goodyear DuraTracs are good because the tread lasts long but they arn't great in mud or on rocks. I have only heard good things about the MT/R Kevlar off road but how do they handle on road?

Not necessary if you don't want to. It's a matter of preference really. Steel wheels tend to be cheaper, but alloy wheels in 15's are cheap enough anyway. I ran the MB72 alloy 15'' wheels a while ago. No caliper grinding is needed.

I really want to go with ones where I wont have to do any caliper grinding. Is there a way to know which ones will and which ones wont before I buy wheels?

For the Goodyear MT/R kevlar is says approved rim width is 8.5-12 but my friends have told me to get 15x8 in rims is this correct?

15x 8 inch wheel is fine. The tires stay on the rim better when you air down. In the offroad world you air down to 12 psi or so to get better traction. Every tire wheel combo is different when it comes to what psi is best. You would be safe to go 12-15 and notice a real difference in offroad performance.

When you get real serious you can get beadlocks and go even lower. They do what they say... they lock the bead of the tire to the wheel. One day I will get serious....:) this is an example of what a DD setup properly can do without beadlocks.

The problem with the wheels you linked is that they are the wrong bolt pattern for a JK. You need 5x5. :)

It's tough to say. From what I've heard sometimes the steel wheels have more a tendency to rub the calipers because of the welds on the inside.
