2wd gearbox options for 07-11 JK 3.8?

Hi guys.

No, I'm not doing this to my JK, but have just done the inlet manifold gasket and had a brainwave.
The 3.8 is so narrow that it would be a great repower option for my Maxda 1500SS or a little hot rod.
But it would need a gearbox to be north/south for a RWD car.

I'm in Australia, so we never got the 2WD JK. So all I can get is the 4WD gearbox.

Anyone know what's needed to change the 4WD unit to 2WD?

The automatic 42rle transmission behind the 3.8 is common to a lot of applications. I think you can even put the transmission behind some Mazda engines also. I would just search engine adapters with that engine and transmission, I bet you will find something that will work.
Thanks mate. I'd love a manual, but unless I import or figure out how to convert the 4wd gearbox, then auto would be next. The 42rle was fitted here to the Cherokee with the 3.7. I have no idea of that fits the 3.8 though. Out here, the 3.8 was only fitted to the JK.

The gearbox should be no problem. As long as you're going 2WD, just remove the transfer case. you should be able to get a plain tail housing for either the manual or automatic tranny with the proper output shaft. Just don't look for it as a Jeep part.
Wonder if anyone here has gone from 2wd to 4wd? Hope they didn't toss out their 2wd parts lol

Edit. Different mainshaft and from up to 2010. I'd say that part would be near obsolete from FC. I'd need to locate US parts and import, I think.
Why not use a 3.6 instead of a 3.8? More power and there should be plenty of tranny options
Too wide, mate. The 3.8 is tiny.

As Caver said: The gearbox or transmission is normal. (I have the 6sp manual.) You just need to leave off the transfer case to make it 2WD only.

Awesome, thanks heaps for that. I'll start looking for a wreck.
The Chrysler Crossfire used the NSG 370. Not sure if the bellhousing would fit the 3.8...
