I currently have stock GY Wranglers on my JK. 245-75-17's.
My son told me I could put something as big as a 285-70-17 on there.
Is that correct? Seems too wide for the rim. I know nothing about this.

Your fine. A million folks before you have put 33-12.5 tires and 35-12.5 tires on stock wheels. While it's not exactly text book correct, it's been done for decades.

A 285 is 285 mm wide, divide that by 25.4 mm per inch for width in inches.
That's 11.22" wide.

There would be no burning buss full of nuns should you do this.
